Hi All,
Fred is now 10 days post op and the last couple of days he has been really mopey and depressed. He is now whimpering which he has not done before. He's on Tramadol and mobic but I think it's not significantly lowering his pain. Up until now the drugs have worked really well. Why is that 10 days after the operation he is feeling significant pain? Is this normal?

Has he done more physical activity than normal? Is he pooping/peeing/eating ok? If he has done more physical activity than he was, he may have over done it and is sore. If you think that perhaps he is in pain I would check with your vet to see if maybe you can up the dosage or get something else on board. Does he only whimper/whine at certain times? It could be connected to something outside of himself. Cody was pretty sore throughout the first two-three weeks. We didn't let him do any exercise (only out to potty and right back in) the first two weeks. He shivered a bit, which we think was either a pain spike or cold, throughout those first two weeks too. If you are worried at all though I would call your vet and inquire with them.

Cody is our 7 year old Australian Heeler mix boy. Diagnosed on 2/20/14 and became a tripawd 2/21/14! We chose a homeopathic approach and he is being treated by Dr. Loops our of NC.

We took him up to the vet and he was given a shot of morphine. The vet thinks it's phantom leg pain
. His temp was also a little up so we've got more anti-biotics. He's sleeping now.
Up till now he's done no exercise and his bowels are fine and he's weeing. Because he's been so good pain wise we did reduce his pain Meds so we think that might also be a factor. The vet wants us to call him later today to see how he's doing and whether he needs a pain patch. He thinks he's going to be ok.

Looks like the vet has things figured out.
started lowerng m Hap Hannah's pan meds areond two weeks and had to put her back on them well to the third week. So e dogs must ake lnger to recover tjan others and some...for whatever reason...seem to jave more pain from ther particular surgery.
Cod's Mom asked yo some great questions. Your respk ses seemed to indicate everything else is going smoothly.
I would stay on top of his elevated temperature though. That can make him feel mopey. Nfections can creep in pretty mich at anytime with these surgeries and yoj definitely want to stay ahead of the game.

Oh wow I'll bet he felt goooooood after that morphine. Did the doc mention putting him on gabapentin?
It's not unheard of for a dog to experience pain this far out after amputation, it's likely due to him trying to do more than he did right after surgery. As any human who's ever had an operation knows, after a few weeks you start to feel like you can get back to your usual routine so you try it and then "whammo!" ouch!
Fred has a new gait that will take his body some getting used to. Gentle stretches and short PT sessions will go a long way to helping him feel good again.
