Hi, Arty is doing well, seems more interested in stuff and starting to woof again.😁

just wanted some advice on Gabapentin. He was on it 3x a day which we started just over a week ago. We did speak to the oncologist that doing it 3 x a day might be tricky long term because of work commitments. So we tried reducing it to 2 yesterday and today but I think we need to up it again. He was a bit stressy panty and randomly yelping a bit today. So, our plan for the rest of the week is to tag team again with work and give 7am, 2pm and 10pm.

However next week may prove tricky. Is there a way we could fit 3 doses say around 8am, 4pm and then 10pm or is that too close. Just trying to think of s solution to fit around work as well. Thank you

"checking above to make sure I am not posting in vet forum icon_lol

Not a vet, and certainly not giving vet advice. Matter of fact you might want to run this by your own vet and get the ok.

With that being said, the efficacy of the drug is best at as even intervals as you can get, however we all have to work and take care of other things in life... smiley5

The 4pm-10pm is the only one that sends out a warning signal. If you could do 11pm it would probably be better, but if you cannot then I would rationalize in my own little brain that as long as it isn't LESS than 6 hours you may be ok. It might gork him out and make him sleepier... I do not honestly know if there are any other things to worry about which is why I would ask my vet or at least go to the Vet forum and ask Dr. Pam to make sure. I would think the timing would be better than not giving at all, but again that is just my opinion. I did not ever deal with Gabapentin until I had to have Huckleberry's leg amputated and until I found this beautiful site.

I know, clear as mud, right?

Maybe others that have had similar issues can chime in with more helpful information.

That has been our experience as well with scheduling Wyatt Ray 's 3x daily dose. It's a challenge even for us. We work at home and sometimes forget that mid-day dose, so we have to set alarms to remember!

As Jackie mentioned, run it by your vet, but we've been told by our own vet that the worst that will happen if the schedule is off a bit is that the animal will get a bit sleepier and the Gabapentin will wear off sooner than the next scheduled dose.

I'm glad it's working for Arty!

For what its worth, on med surg wards in hospitals, we have a one hour window for most oral medications.  What this means is a scheduled at say, 9:00 am, is considered on time if administered between 8:00 and 10:00 am.

Metabolism of medications can is variable depending on individual circumstances.  Peaks and troughs happen.

Get those meds into the system as close to the times prescribed, but recognize that you have a window and within that window, you are doing a good job.

Hope this helps.
