Hi

misty is 7 days today postop left hind leg amp. I just took her off pain meds. She had her last Rimadyl last night. Vet doesn’t think she needs them and she doesn’t seem to be in pain.  I can’t get her to come out of her kennel this morning though and she hasn’t eaten.  Is this just coming off of the pain meds. My vet probably thinks I’m crazy because I’ve called every day with questions. Is this pretty normal?

Hi Archygirl and Misty, welcome. What was the reason for her amputation? And what pain meds was she on? How was she behaving before you stopped the pain meds?

In my non-vet opinion, seven days is really early for a dog to come off pain medication. Most are on meds until about Day 10 and even then some need them longer.

If she's not coming out of her kennel, and she's showing a serious lack of appetite, that's a pain indicator. She is probably in pain, and these are normal signs of a dog who needs more medication.

Call your vet and do not be shy about advocating for more, possibly better, pain medication. Misty is counting on you.

Let us know what happens OK?

I just called the vet for more pain meds and gave her what I had left. Giving it a chance to work.

Rocky had his "crash" about a week after his surgery. I'm guessing it took about that long for all the hospital meds to get out of his system. The crash lasted for a few days and then he perked up again.

I know we stopped some of his meds after a couple of weeks, but he was on Tramadol for at least three weeks after the surgery.

Hopefully Misty just needs to have the pain managed for a bit longer. Good luck!

David and Rocky (and Baxter now too!)

Rocky had his right front leg amputated on Valentine's Day 2017 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

He joined the September Saints on September 3, 2017.

He is the toughest, bravest, sweetest and best friend I'll ever know.

Thank you. It is so hard watching her hurt. I already feel guilty for amputating her leg. Cancer sucks.

The first two weeks of recovery are hard.  Remember, you are doing this FOR her and not TO her!  So know need to feel "auilty" about trying to give her a chance at a pain free life!

It IS major surgery and it does hurt!  As everyone has said, seven days is too early to be off pain meds.  My Happy Hannah toodk tem for three weeks before tapering off.

What pain meds did the Bet prescribe?  The pain has gotten ahead start so it may take several doses bedore the pain subsides.  Sloooow and easy.  Potty breaks and then rest, rest, rest.

Let us know how Misty is doing.  Ha'g in there!    She'll get her sparkle back soo !

She’s on Codeine now. She is better and I got her a refill. I’ll keep her on it for longer. They gave me plenty. Did Hannah have chemo too or just the amp?

Glad tpyou vot her some more pain meds.  Good job!

I did do four rounds of Carboplatin (she had osteosarco.a)  for Happy Hannzh.  She had no side effects.  Some dogs do experience some nausea or tired ess for a day or two after the treatme t, but the Vet tives meds for that.

Please k kw that there is no right or wrong when it co es to chemo.  It's an individual choice with NO guarantees one way or anoither.  My Happy Hannah liked carrides and liked goi g to the Vet so that was important in my decision.  Also, if the treatments do cause side effects you can always stop at anytime.

Some dogs do no chemo and get great extended quality time...some don't.  Some dogs do chemo and get great extended quality time.....some don't.  It really is a crap shoot.

How is Misty today?  Hiw is her appetite?  Give jher any yummy foods she'll eat....chicken, eggs znd bacon, grilled chees, etc.Update when uou can.

Hugs
