When Gus was on the Gabapentin- Rimadyl combo he didn't seem to have any side effects. His phantom pain lasted about 4 weeks but by the end of that 4 weeks his episodes were quite mild

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

Two weeks ago today was surgery day.  Capone is acting very lethargic today.  However, he seems to have a rather active day and then be uber lazy the next.  I had to tell him a white lie to get him up to go potty this AM.  I said we would go for a car ride.  🙁 Feeling bad about it but I know he needed to do business outside. He was more than happy to get up for this adventure.  He is happy to move about outside once he is up but man does it take some encouragement.  Only gave 1/2 pill of Tramadal this AM, no other pain medicine.  We shall see how the day plays out.

Hi Sweet Capone!  I agree with Comet's mom-I don't like tramadol.  We took Cooper off it after 5 days.  My daughters have had 3 ACL/Meniscus repairs (new ACL's) and I only kept them on pain meds for 3 days.  The narcotics played with their minds and they hated it.  So I didn't think Coop needed to be on them too long.  At times he looked uncomfortable, but not in pain.  More like "what is going on here?" uncomfortable.  So like everyone said, worry here (I am quite the worry woman).  I don't think I would have made it through without this website!  Coop started chemo today....you should have seen me shaking giving him the pills!way-confused

Sounds like Capone's recuperation is rather normal. Cutting back the tramadol at this point should definitely help (most dogs are off of it completely within 10 days of surgery). All dogs are different in how they react to pain meds, some see more pink elephants than others. As Capone gets used to his new body he will get stronger. Two weeks out is still pretty early. Hope today goes nice and mellow.

Good luck with the chemo Coop! Ain't no big thing, you'll see!

Happy Friday everyone!

Slowly taking Capone off his pain medicine.  He had a 1/2 of a 50 mg Tramadol pill last night and I've not given him any today.  It just seems to be business as usual.  Lazy about going potty this AM.  However, once he gets up and out he tools around the yard a bit to do his morning business. Keep in mind that we're already at 100 degrees with a feels like temperature of 130 degrees. I just did a double take when I was checking the weather online.   UGH!!!   Came back inside had some water and spent some time trying to get comfy.  Was on his dog bed for a bit then decided he wanted to come over and hang out closer to where I'm working. He is just snoozing and dreaming away. Hope that things continue in this positive direction.  We're at day 15 so I guess we've made it past the first 2 weeks of "recovery hell'  -- Thank goodness!!!

I actually got out of the house to have dinner with family last night.  When we returned home. Capone was standing up with his tail wagging like crazy -- He even had a toy in his mouth.  Now this is some behavior I'm familiar with 🙂

I love you pumpkin.  Stay strong!!

Hoorah for Capone! Nothing like a tail wag greeting at the door.

Keep up the good recovery Capone and stay cool!

(Everyone should just come to San Diego - it is really pretty lovely here. Sorry... Feel kinda guilty about it sometimes...We feel quite lucky that the hubster got a job here!)

Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
