Thank you for the info on the pilot volunteers.  At least they can write off their expenses.  I am amazed at the # of them willing to help.  If I had a plane and people needed help, it would be soooo rewarding!

I know that this would probably be great for me.  Matter of fact, I've been in a good mood for the first time since losing Raven it seems.  I didn't notice, my friends pointed it out.  But I sort of dread it? Does that sound wierd?  I am excited and dream about having a dog to accompany me around the farm again, etc, all the things that senior bully Betty can't do.  But there's the fear of losing another, or more big vet bills.  I've gotten a New Normal now without Raven and would have to adjust again, so it's scarey.  I guess like the fear of when a couple is having a baby.  Of course it's good, but scarey!  I worry Betty will hate him, and Cowboy cat, I am just trying to have faith that it will work.  I am hoping that Billy Bob, the bobcat may be able to be his friend, Billy Bob's lonely now.  We'll see!

Beth:  I didn't realize it was so far to ABQ, thanks for pointing that out.  I have some email addys for 4 people in Taos that are canine rescue folks that someone sent me, I could ask them...  Also, an update:  The new pilots that said they could do Taos-Vegas and Vegas-Fallon (I thought Auburn, but he's based in Fallon which is only 3 hours from here): That first leg said he can go to Taos, but I would still need someone to take him to the local airport.  It's the one that would fly to Colorado Springs to Jim, if we decided on that instead, *that* pilot was coming from ABQ.  So, I guess I am leaning toward flying the whole trip and going through Vegas.  Still getting details...

YES! I am in Vegas! I can take care of him until the flight goes out.  No problem other than I might want to keep him!smile  So, consider it done.   I have a super large crate, too.

Dawn,

Speaking your feelings...

When you get the chance, please rent this movie called "Penny Serenade".  It's an old black and white 40's movie with Cary Grant and Irene Dunn.  It's about the adoption of a baby and how special it was.  It's a sweet and touching story.  The story reminds me of how you are feeling with he loss of Raven.   I think it would make you feel so much better.

Jim, if you are going to be driving from Taos, you could likely pick him up from the shelter, too…

So far, the idea would be for our friends to get Baggins to CO Springs where we could head directly West from there. But Rene still needs to confirm that. Otherwise, I'd still be willing to pick him up in Taos with a route west to be determined depending who else can help.

Hopefully Jerry will chime in soon!

Wow, that's great!  that's the organization I belong to as a rescue and asked for transport for Baggins from Taos to just about any airport in the Bay Area or SoCal.  No bites yet, but  I'm hoping!

OK, I just heard from my dear friend Patrick in Taos.  He said my crate is useless, its been ruined by the solar radiation of Taos's high altitude.  foolish me for leaving anything plastic where the sun could get at it.

However, Patrick is very happy to get Baggins from Stray Hearts (the shelter) and bring him to the Taos Airport or hand him over to whoever will drive him out of Taos.  He's just waiting for further instructions from me as to when and who and where.

Hi Beth,

I found these pilots on Pilots N Paws.  I went to the site to see what you put and read about what they do.  Then I went to the forum where pilots post availability.  I wrote about 15 of them that said they were available in the areas of the 5 states involved and 4 have agreed to help (depending on the route).  So, it *is* because of you that I found them, even though they didn't reply to your post on their rescue forum.  THANK YOU!

I may need to get to your crate in Taos?  I can ship it back to you.  So, please keep trying to reach your local friends there.  And I'm waiting for the shelter to get back to me for my credit card info and a vet appt date/time.

This is exciting!!  What could be better Baggins getting a wonderful furever home and Dawn getting a big boy that will help to fill a hole in her heart.

If it ends up that he goes by car and gets into Arizona, you can count on us to help head him west.

So... would this work?

  1. Jim* — Taos, NM to Quartzite, AZ ±
  2. Jo Ann — AZ to So. CA
  3. Dawn — So. CA to Auburn

If anyone can help add an extra leg in between Taos and Jo Ann, even better!

*Whether I pick up Baggins in Taos or CO. Springs (with our friends
getting him there) is TBD.

We've created a public map that anyone with a Google account can edit. It can help us determine the route once we know who's driving where...

The Baggins Rescue Railroad

I just noticed how far South Jo Ann is and discovered she's practically in California, so we would rule out having our friend bring Baggins North to us first if AZ in the next destination. This also clarifies the need for another driver in between if we take the Southern route.  Seems like the northern route along 80 would be more direct, where we could easily get him to Salt Lake City.

Wow, that map thingy is really cool!  Gives me the perspective I needed.

Okay, update:

One of the pilots that agreed to fly him from Taos-Vegas (overnight with Ge'Lena) and Vegas to Fallon, NV (I pick up there, 3 hours from me)...  he suggested that commercial flying may be an option that could actually be less stressful since he'd be here within 6 hours, rather than 2-4 days.  The pilot even offered to help with the cost, since it will cost him quite a bit to fly his leg otherwise.  The cost I've heard would be approx $350 and Baggins still would need transport to either DEN or ABQ (depending on airline).

I could email a lot of railroad volunteers in AZ still, but haven't because the other route was coming together first.  But looking at the map, it seems shorter?

I have also emailed railroad volunteers in SLC to see if someone can go to Wells or Winnemucca with him to meet me.  Otherwise the cost for fuel is $350 or so (I may as well do the commercial air thing).  I also checked on RENTING a hybrid car, the difference in fuel cost would offset the rental and get a motel and save money, as opposed to driving the RV...and not worry so much about the heat and/or breakdown risk.

So, where it stands:  Any input from you all about flying him in cargo?  As opposed to so many days on the road?  Meanwhile I'm waiting to hear if I can get another leg in at SLC to offset my cost there.

And the transport that is arranged with the Bassett hound going to Colorado Springs on Thursday, they are leaving from ABQ and I need help (Beth's Patrick?) meeting them at minimum maybe halfway?  It is a ground transport (I thought it was a flight, but there is also a pilot that may do it if we need to arrange it another time).

I have arranged for Baggins to have a vet appt tomorrow (Wed) for xrays for lung mets and to check for injury hardware or healed bones to try to determine what happened to him that made him a tripawd.  Depending on what the vet sees, we may do an ultrasound too for liver/spleen/kidney mets.  And also checking his hips and ACL's and getting a health certificate.  Stray Hearts has agreed to give me a crate and waive his adoption fee to offset my costs!!  🙂

Thank you everyone for making this happen!

I would not fly any dog of mine as cargo, based on the bad experience of a childhood pet. But that's just me. If we take him via ground, and he can still get to CO Springs Thursday, Mary Malon can get him to me in Fort Collins Friday, and I could hand him of to your contact in SLC Saturday morning.

At this point some decisions need to be made quickly and some specific locations and times arranged. We'd need to know the SLC location ASAP to reserve lodging nearby.
