Mr. Admin,

Do you control (as king of the universe) how the first section Forum/Topic displays or is that a setting we have access to?  After the last big upgrade a few weeks or months or something ago that section got a lot longer (which I liked).  And the 'red' flag indicating new post went  away when you did admin stuff, not when I had read it.  The red flag even went away if I had not read it (hard to keep track of what I had read).

After today's maintenance neither the red nor black flag went away, even after I read the posts, unless I think you had approved it? And it seems now that once you have approved it and I read it the whole line goes away. This actually makes sense when you read the title of the section (Most Recent Topics with Unread Posts), but it feels like I am missing new posts.

Did any of that make sense? Is it just me?  I am on Firefox at home and IE at work and I saw the same thing in both places today after the maintenance.

Also when I logged on at work after maint. today I got some warning banner about activating something- I can find it and do that if I was supposed to.

(and stop rolling your eyes at my lack of computer literacy)

I too liked the longer  "recent posts" section...

I, too noticed that new posts seemed to magically go bye-bye even if I hadn't read them.

Barely, let's see if I can clarify some things since I can't seem to find the topic where I did this before (need more coffee) …

All forum moderators (aka: the Mod Pawd) have access to the Admin's Unread Posts Queue (aka: the Admin Bar). Settings for the Admin Bar and the Recent Topics with Unread Posts List on the main forum page (aka: Unread Posts) can be accessed from the user's Tripawds Dashboard -> Forum -> Admins tab.

NOTE for those moderators with a blog: If the Forum tab does not appear, switch from your blog dashboard to you to your Tripawds dashboard via the Dashboard -> My Sites tab. (Remember to switch back to access your blog's post editing, media library, etc.)

Forum Settings for Moderators

Checking "Display the Admin Bar" will do just that. This will show the queue of posts that have yet to be read by a site administrator (aka: Admin or Jerry).

NOTE: Posts will "magically go bye-bye" from this queue once an admin has read them, even if you have not, read them yet that is.

Check "Display Admin Bar Fixed at Top" if you want the queue to remain fixed at the topi of your browser window when scrolling.

Should you really care to, you can also opt to receive email notification every time a new post is made in the forums.

To "Display Unread Posts on Front Page" check the box that says just that. This will show the list of the most recent 20 topics with posts the user has not yet read.

So… while we do control certain universal things around here, Moderators can control how things display for themselves.

On another note, I'm not sure I've ever seen any "black flags" in these forums, and I just confirmed the tiny red flags that appear above forums on the front page (indicating topics with unread posts) are functioning properly.

I also just confirmed that an admin marking post(s) as read from the Admin Queue does not remove those post(s) from a moderator's Unread posts list. Hopefully this answers questions rather than raise new ones.

… I got some warning banner about activating something

I'd be really interested in knowing what you were being asked to activate, and when/where.

For the record, the "Most Recent Topics With Unread Posts" lists currently displays the latest 20 topics with unread posts. It has never listed more than that. For guests (or members not logged in) the Most Recent Posts list includes the last 20 posts from all topics.

PS: I notice now what "black flags" you were referring to. Betaman doesn't post much so he didn't see any flags indicating topics he had posted in.

Ok I just logged out and I can see the longer post section, I was just confused because it used to do that too even when I was logged in. Thanks for the clarification!

OK,

I have the admin bar set the way I want it.  I tried the different options when I first became a Moderator and once I decided how I liked it I have not changed it.

I went and looked at how I had my forum settings checked just to be sure-  I have the "Display Unread Posts on Front Page" checked.  Just to see what would happen I unchecked the box and reloaded.  No recent topics showed when I opened the forums page.  I went back and checked the box and reloaded.  When I looked only 1 topic was listed.  My understanding from your response is that there should be at most 20 of the most recent topics listed with unread posts.  I know I have not read all of the new posts today.

I just tested it again- I opened the main forums page in a new window.  There were four topics listed with new posts.  I opened oneand read it.  When I went back to the main forum page there were only two topics listed with new posts, so it looks like one dropped off.

On the red flags-I mean the ones that show up to the left on each topic line when a new post shows up.   I know that only admins have the ability to remove posts from the 'New Post Que'.  But it seems that when you do that as an admin  it removes the red flags from the left side of the topics that I have not read in my view in the forums- are you saying that is how it is supposed to work?

I apologize for not copying down the warning banner thing- I know better than that!!   I'll be sure and copy what ever I see going forward- I just got lazy.

Sorry about my confusing posts- I am sure you get frustrated trying to figure out what I mean.    It's just one of my charms I guess...

OK, we've been in touch with the powers that be. As expected, this is another one of those new 'you can please some of the people some of the time' features. In short, you're seeing the exact same number of unread posts as always. Now, however, that's just all you're seeing...

SPF Master said

The number of topics with posts new to the user viewing the forum is calculated in exactly the same way as it has been for some time. So there was no change there. Thus the number of entries being seen is what was seen prior. It's just that before they were padded out with posts they HAD seen to make up the numbers.

We were continually being asked to have a separate page view of a users unread posts. This is something we did have in the early days of SP but that had fallen out of more recent versions. This was put in to 4.3.3, it is on the breadcrumbs strip over by the post count and the 'mark all as read' button.*

At the same time the list on the 'front' page was changed to be more reflective of actual new posts.

*Although it means yet another database query upon every forum page load, we have enabled this feature so the unread post list can now be viewed at any time, from any forum page... for now. All feedback welcome.

Clear as mud?

Thanks Jim.

For me this is fine : In short, you're seeing the exact same number of unread posts as always. Now, however, that's just all you're seeing...

As long as the unread posts don't disappear before I read them- I swear that is what appeared to be happening, especially when I tested it this morning- from my post # 7 above: I just tested it again- I opened the main forums page in a new window.  There were four topics listed with new posts.  I opened one and read it.  When I went back to the main forum page there were only two topics listed with new posts, so it looks like one dropped off.

I can do without the ability to view unread posts from any forum page, as long as the list on the main forum page works correctly, especially if the additional data base query slows the system down.

But since you enabled the feature this afternoon everything seems to be working correctly for me.  I see a list of unread posts, when I read one it disappears, but the others stay until I open them.

Thanks for your patience and effort.

ME TOO!

There were about 12 topics with new posts and I click in one and poof! there were only 3!  I click into another one and poof! there is only 1 new one (this one!)

If I was younger, it might be okay but I can't remember from one minute to the next!  I need technology to keep me updated!

The really bad part is everyone is going to miss topics and they are going to go ignored.

If topic x has three new posts, and you click on one to visit that topic, the other two will be removed from the list because you saw them when visiting the topic they were in. The system is smart enough to determine whether or not you loaded a page with unread posts, but it cannot tell if you actually read the posts on the page, so it must assume you did.

With that being said, we can't seem to replicate the symptoms you're both describing, with neither guest, user, or moderator accounts. I'll forward the details to the developers again and see if they have any input. Stay tuned. Should either of you care to test the functionality of the unread posts Page (accessible from the right side of the breadcrimbs bar) versus that of the unread posts List on the forum home page, we'd be interested to know of any differences.

Just re-read this... everything is working correctly now? Including the "front" fotum page unread list and the "page" view? Or, just the page view of unread topics? Thanks.

Not working again.

I opened the main forum page and there were several unread posts listed- more than 10 I think. At first I opened one, read it and went back to the main forum page.  The one dropped off, but everything else was there.

Neither Admin or Jerry was online, and there were 22 or so posts showing in the red box in what I call my moderator bar at the top (the one that shows just the number of new posts in the red box, and the number of posts waiting moderation in the purple box).

Then I opened a post from a new member and was taking some time to write a reply.  When I opened it there was still about 8 unread forum/topics posts listed on the main forum page.

When I went back to the main forum page all new Forum/Topic posts were gone except one.  Jerry was now online and the number of posts showing in the red box at the top was down to 5.

Could it be that when you guys as admins remove the posts from the 'new post' que it is removing the forum/topics unread posts from what Moderators see? (Cometdog seems to be having the same problem as I am).

The only other difference for me is that last night I was on Firefox at home, I am on IE here at work now.

If I have time tonight I will test what you asked for in you post 12 above.  I can't do it now at work.
