I know that you can add a video link to youtube videos in our blog posts, but is there a way to 'embed' the videos... so they can be watched in the blog, or if double-clicked, then watched larger in youtube?

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!

There sure is. And now that you've upgraded Jakes Journey to a Tripawds Supporter blog, it's much easier! We'll be writing about this in detail on the News blog soon, but here's how I do it …

EDIT: It's even easier to embed videos in blog posts now! Read new method for embedding videos below.

NOTE: These instructions in this post are still valid for embedding videos here in the forums.

First, as a Supporter, you should visit your new Plugins menu and activate the Unfiltered MU plugin (as well as others if desired, which we will cover separately). This will make your life a lot easier. By default, WordPress strips out embed code. But with this plugin activated, it won't.

Now, to embed the video: Place your cursor where you want the video to appear in your blog post and type an "X" on a line by itself, after a paragraph return for instance. Then visit the video page on YouTube and select the entire object embed code. To do so, just click within the Embed field shown to the right of your video* and right click then copy. This code should look something like …

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.yout.....;<param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.yout.....&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Return to your draft blog post (forum topic reply) and click the HTML tab. Find that "X" and select it then paste the embed code to replace it. Click the Visual tab to continue writing your post. You should notice a yellow box representing the Flash object. That's you're movie. It should display properly once you preview or publish your post.

For Non-Supporters: You can still embed YouTube movies and other Flash objects. The code, however, will get stripped out whenever you edit a post using the visual editor and your embedded movie will disappear. You can disable the Visual Editor from your profile page.

*NOTE: The embed code will appear only if you have allowed embedding in your My Videos preferences. You can also customize the player for your embedded video by clicking the little gear icon next to the embed field.

And thank you for sharing videos of Jake's Journey! I needed this nidge to post these instructions anyway.

FYI: If you ever encounter trouble embedding a video, where the code is appearing in the Visual Editor instead of the actual Flash object, simply deactivate and reactivate the Unfiltered MU plugin.

Correction: Recent tests confirm that WordPress will strip object embed code out of blog post drafts regardless of Visual Editor settings. The Unfiltered MU plugin must be activated for easy embedding of YouTube movies. Access to plugins menu is available to Tripawds Supporters.

Just wanted to share the information in this recent email exchange with a member who uploaded a video file to a free tripawds blog account.

… is there a way to properly embed it with a player?

The best and easiest way is to upload your movies to YouTube, or another sharing site. Then just copy the video's embed code from its view page and paste it into your post, using the HTML tab. Clear as mud? Winker

This function is possible with the premium plugins available to Tripawds Supporters…

FYI: Uploading videos directly to your free Tripawds blog will quickly consume your 25 MB upload space quota too.

Hope this helps. Please seek further help in the discussion forums so answers can be shared with all.

Big news! We just made it even easier for Tripawds Supporter blogs to embed videos from favorite sgaring sites. Simply activate the the Viper's Video Quicktags plugin to easily embed videos from various video websites such as YouTube, DailyMotion, and Vimeo into your posts.

Click plugins -> Installed -> Select Viper's Video Quicktags -> Click Activate. A new row of buttons for embedding videos will then appear in your post editor. Click the plugin's Settings link for detailed configuration options and online help.

The Unfiltered MU plugin has been deactivated for security reasons, so the instructions above are no longer relevant. Note that editing previous posts with embedded videos will strip the object code requiring videos to be embedded again using the new, easier method.

Before anyone asks, a couple points of clarification:

  1. This function is possible only with the premium Video Quicktags plugin available to Tripawds Supporters activated.
  2. A quicktag is a simple  snippet of code. In this case, one that will embed a movie from the video's view page URL entered using the embed buttons. This code will show in your post editor where the video will appear. The video will display once the post is previewed or published.

FYI: I just wrote about embedding videos in WPMU blog posts using Viper's quicktags in a bit more detail on our Behind The Scenes blog.
