Long-time Tripawds members may have noticed things are awfully quiet around here lately. Unfortunately, the crickets may be getting louder. That's because Google hates Tripawds.com. Let us explain.

Why Google Hates Tripawds, and How to Help Change That

We know our headline sounds extreme, but extreme times call for these measures. Here's why:

Do a Google search for phrases that concerned pet parents use when looking for answers to help their amputee dogs and cats, such as:

  • "caring for tripod dogs"
  • "three legged dog care" or
  • "tripod cat care"
  • "dog amputation help"
  • "cat amputation help"

You will notice that Tripawds.com rarely ranks high in search results anymore. We used to be listed as one of the top three links in Google and in multiple pages thereafter. But no longer, thanks to various algorithims used for ranking search results (aka "Google PageSpeed Standards").

google tripawds
Tripawds results get buried by Google.

This isn't the first time Google has penalized websites with algorithim changes. Previously, they required websites to be more mobile friendly, so we addressed that issue. Later, they required us to implement more secure access to the site, so we took care of that too. Now, Google is penalizing websites for taking "too long" to load in web browsers.

Exactly what is too long, according to Google? Well, certain pages at Tripawds can take to six to ten seconds to load content capable of interaction by users. But now Google developers have made it so that the highest ranking search results are given to pages that load in milliseconds – regardless of of whether or not that page content is outdated or even helpful.

As a result, many of the most helpful resources available at Tripawds.com (like our Discussion Forums) are now buried deep in the dark corners of the internet, since Google owns over 90% of all search engine traffic. Sadly, fixing this issue is more complicated than plugging into faster hardware.

Meanwhile, less informative, much older and outdated web pages and articles are out-ranking us.

This is why our forums have been eerily quiet over the last month.

New members cannot find us.

Our traffic has dropped to unprecedented lows, and so have  Tripawds Gear sales and commissions that help support our community. Awareness of Tripawds Foundation assistance programs and vital donations to keep them going are likely to follow.

As soon as we discovered this was happening, Admin Guy began frantically working long hours to address this situation. He is continuously doing his best to improve site speeds. In geek speak, he is: minfying scripts, eliminating render blocking resources, optimizing server performance, compressing images, and much more. Whew!

The sad truth is, certain resources will likely have to go if we are ever to compete with Google PageSpeed standards. The stylish design, photo galleries, live chats, discussion forums, random widgets and rotating banners all impact our search results now.

This massive animal amputee support community we have lovingly built from the ground up for the last twelve years, will undergo dramatic changes if we are to survive.

Tripawds As You Know It, Will Change

Keeping the Google monster happy means we must strip Tripawds.com resources and design down to a bare bones format, focusing on information and functionality. Many of the bells and whistles added over the years may disappear. Of course, the Tripawds Discussion Forums will remain, though some of its additional features may be removed.

For a sense of the time and money involved in the overhaul required, professional website development firms have provided project estimates to us that range from $17,000 to $70,000.

Yep, our two person operation with one do-it-all website administrator has built a valuable content-rich, feature laden resource that would cost that much for anyone else to create.

So unless we win the lotto, we cannot pay this kind of money and must continue to address these issues ourselves.

We are not asking for donations for this situation. We would prefer that any contributions go to Tripawds Foundation so our programs can remain. Admin Guy is stuck with the job, and that's all there is to it. His primary goal will be to improve PageSpeed ranking, which in turn should help improve search engine results. As he identifies specific deliverables others may be able to assist with, contractors will be hired – with no funds coming from the Foundation. So, be prepared to see some changes coming soon.

Changes in Google algorithims are hurting Tripawds everywhere.

This complicated Tripawds.com de-construction will cost us more time, effort, and money than we ever anticipated spending on website development at one time. This is time and money that we personally don't have, because we spend most of our work days dedicated to this labor of love that doesn't even come close to paying what a California McDonald's worker earns. We will need to take on extra freelance graphic design and writing work to pay the bills, which delays a fix for this problem.

As our Internet presence remains buried, Google's search engine tactics hurt us financially, but more importantly Google is hurting pet parents the most, at a time when they desperately need our many free resources.

Here's How You Can Get Pet Parents the Dog and Cat Amputation Help They Need

We must get the Tripawds name out into the veterinary community and keep it there. The more vets who refer clients to the blogs and forums, the better.

Here's what we can all do until the Tripawds.com makeover is complete:

Engage in the Tripawds Discussion Forums and share your stories in your own Tripawds blog. Show the people who do find us that you care and are ready to help. Plus the more activity throughout our network, the better chance that other search engines will continue ranking us highly in search results.

Share your blog posts on social media. If you have a Tripawds Blog, your posts are shared to the Tripawds Facebook page automatically. Help spread the word by sharing your posts in your news feed or other groups.

Request a stack of free Tripawds Foundation brochures for your veterinary clinic.

Share your story about how Tripawds has helped you on veterinary websites and Facebook pages.

Ask veterinary clinics and anyone you know in the veterinary field to include Tripawds.com as a resource on their website. The more of these "backlinks" we have on respected websites, the better.

Finally, please encourage your friends and family to use the following Amazon links when making purchases. Tripawds.com receives a small commission from sales. These links are only good for 30-day increments, so please share them periodically:

Canada Residents: Start Shopping at Amazon Here to Help Tripawds

UK Residents: Start Shopping at Amazon Here to Help Tripawds

Thank You for Caring Enough to Read This Far

If you've read this far, we are grateful for your attention span. In a world where ten seconds is too slow for the average search engine user, your dedication to our community is a breath of fresh air.

We promise to keep you apprised of the situation as we have more to report. Thank you for all you do to help Tripawds everywhere.

AS PIFFED OFF AND SAD AS I AM TO READ THIS, I CANNOT EVEN BEFIN TO IMAGINE  HOW YOU TWO FEEL!!!!  This just breaks my heart for you two, for us, for all those needing help, hope, invaluable first hand experience and CUTTING EDGE and VALID I information!  Sooooo mad and sad!!!

All this going on behind the scenes  while trying to keep the site going and reaching out to every single one of us on  the site, AND taking  care of maturing Wyatt...OMD!!!   The fact that you are still committed to making this work...OMD!!!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS!!!  I know it wasn't  easy  and not something  you wanted to do, but we are all so grateful  you did!❤❤❤❤❤

And thanks for pointing out ways we can help!    We all want to!!    The Amazon links,  MORE ACTIVITY on the site  brochures to clinics.  Easy enough.  I know I get behind in responding to bloggers and even in the forums sometimes, so I can at least help in the "more activity " part.

I do have a question about FuGoogle and their little piece of crap speed ranking.  If I understand this right, how can they possibly  distinguish between slow loading rime vecause ot poor /slow vonnection, versus the site itself being so called slow?

ALL TOGETHER NOW  FuGoogle

TEAM TRIPAWDS IS A FORCE FOR GOOD THAT CAN, AND WILL, OVERCOME FuGoogle!!

With love and unlimi6 appre6 for your will6 to stay the course!!  You two, and Jerry, were born for this life mission and we are all here to supp uou kn any way possible!!

So if FuGoogle gets lots of searches  specifically  for TRIPAWDS.COM does that help in some tiny way?  That's  certainly  something  we could all do a lot...a. w.h.o.l.e. l.o.t👿👹

It's all in the algorithms...server response time and the amount of content is factored upon receipt of packets. These are the things we are working hard to address, as we already have a rather robust server yet an immense amount of content in terms of the numerous stylesheets and scripts required to load the many helpful resources we have here in such a stylish manner.

Besides, the entire world has lightning fast unlimited bandwidth, or so the corporations would like to believe...

So if FuGoogle gets lots of searches specifically for TRIPAWDS.COM does that help in some tiny way?

Not necessarily, what people search for doesn't really matter to the almighty G, only that content which serves up fast, securely, and relevant to those searches. What does matter beyond that, is backlinks from reputable sites linking back to Tripawds.

This is something we as users can impact.  Many of us belong to other animal related communities and forums.  If not against the rules of those sites, one can post a link to tripawds.com in signatures used there.  As mentioned in the original post, social media (facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc) can also help us if we mention this site, link our blogs, etc.  Because that too generates backlinks, just of lesser quality than from pet related organizations. Likewise, it should be relatively easy to negotiate linking agreements with a variety of pet related websites.  It has been many years since I did web optimization, but if you need assistance in this area, let me know.  I maybe old and rusty, but I still am pretty good when it comes to techie type stuff.

Dawna thank you for your suggestions and ideas, and you too Sally! You always have the perfect things to say when we need to hear them most.

And friends, well we know that everyone has a lot going on in their own lives too, so we appreciate any help folks can give as far as the suggestions offered.

Yeah, it's not been fun around here lately but we are doing are darnest to Be More Dog and remember to spend our days the way Jerry, and even crazy Wyatt Ray , wants us to. It's hard not to feel discouraged about this situation but each day we remember that pawsitivity is what is going to get us through, above and beyond this hiccup. We will persevere in honor of all of our brave Tripawd warriors.

Love you all, thanks!

Well I linked Tripawds on my FB page.  I also asked my vet if they could put a link to Tripawds on the website.  Mary(the contact and director) said she would ask the partners.  She thought that was a great idea.  So I am trying 🙂

I just did a little "search" with interesting results. In Microsoft Edge I googled pet amputation and Tripawds came up on the first page. It was the third choice. I went down to the various options and clicked on a few to find Tripawds in that first page somewhere again. Not at the top, but close enough to see quickly.

Then I went to Google Chrome and did the same thing. Tripawds did not come up on the first page at all. I reworded it several different ways with different options and Tripawds did not come up on any of the first pages.

Internet Explorer was a mixed bag depending on the verbiage. Tripawds never came up in the first three or four, depending on how you worded it didn't come up at all.

I know this didn't help fix the problem, but I was really curious to see if there was a difference and there was. These were all using google.com first.

Then I went to Bing.com in each place. For Internet Explorer Tripawds came up second choice right away. In Chrome it was again the second to the top of the page. Microsoft Edge was a little trickier but I did get a positive result in fourth from the top when I searched amputation aftercare.

I remembered I have Firefox (don't use it much) and I did the same thing in Firefox with various results. Some searches didn't bring Tripawds up at all and some brought it up pretty well. Words like aftercare, recovery worked pretty well.

There were some photos that came up from Tripawds, but clicking on them didn't instantaneously bring me here.

I know I am a geek but it did my heart some good to see that some of the success seems to depend on the wording. When I put myself back into my original situation with Huck and used phrases such as amputation or euthanasia, recovery, and things of that nature Tripawds was there. And on a more pawsitive note I think a lot of people that dive into their computer after such a diagnosis keep looking and searching, I know I did. Once I found Tripawds I knew I had the right place.

I hit my Instagram last night with Tripawds. I will find different articles and make posts to help guide people here. Of course I respond to some new amputees and tell them about this site. I only have a couple hundred followers but every little bit helps, right?

Target keyphrases and relative content are certainly key to gaining top SERP positions. Now the big thing – in addition to PageSpeed – is properly structured content using schema markup. Geeking out here too! smiley16

We have begun updating all the Tripawds Featured Blogs with better SEO tactics, focusing on structured content. Tripawds bloggers will notice Yoast is now active on all sites. Any bloggers who have configured any SEO on their site, posts or pages in the past should deactivate All In One SEO and use the Yoast tools to import settings from AIOSEO. that plugin will eventually be removed to avoid any conflicts...which warrants its own Tech Support forum topic coming soon.

But I digress...

Interesting results indeed, thanks for sharing! Shortly after updating SEO and configuring schema for the Tripawds News blog and Gear blog , a search on mobile for dog amputation help returned Tripawds links in 8 of the top 10 organic results. Today, that same search via the desktop shows Tripawds twice near the bottom of page one.

We've opened a huge can of worms here regarding PageSpeed, Schema markup, and a lot more going on under the hood. Rest assured that we're working hard to improve ranking to help Tripawds and their people everywhere with the goal of minimal impact on out users.
