He is so happy to be back in the mix!!! I just posted the videos of his wine bar (and snacks).  He hoped off to use the potty on the walk home and got right back on. I’m thrilled he is loving the rides.

say a prayer w the outing and med schedule tweaking we have a relaxed night.

Hi!  Kip got his staples out today!!! Ortho surgeon came and did it in the car so he didn’t even have to get out! Talk about special treatment ♥️   We’re slowly weening off the anxiety meds and he is seeming happier.  He having some raw elbow issues now though!  Have you ever seen that?? I had mobile vet come yesterday but because of how complicated Kips case is they vet only gave him a topical ointment!   He is also only sleeping in the living room and not the bedroom which is weird but as long as he is sleeping I’m happy

Wow that's some world-class drive-up vet care! Super cool!

Yes unfortunately elbow hygromas are pretty common in amputees. Hard floors are a culprit for sure, but even our Wyatt, who is rarely on hardwood flooring, also battles with one particular hygroma.

DogLeggs are a popular solution:

Here is a string of older but still relevant articles that can give you some ideas for reducing/treating an elbow pressure sore:

Let us know what works for you and Kip OK?

And congratulations on the big step to get staples out! That's HUUUUUUGE!!!! YOU DID IT!!!!

YAAAAAAAY FOR STAPLES OUT!!!!    And so glad to hear how well Kip is doing and enjoying his ride!  So cute that he hops back in so willingly whenever he wants.

Can you post a picture of his elbow sore?  It's not uncommon for these types of "sores" or "callous" type abrasions to form.  There are all sorts of solutions,  wraps, pads, salves, etc.

Glad he's sleeping through the night....all of you!  For. Whatever reason, he likes the living room and that okay.

Thank you!!! The canine angels looks great - will order!   It looks like it hurts!  I have him in the donut still but I think he is more comfy in the Elizabethan collar!   I have the topical lotion and I’ll get the protectors and hopefully it dries up. I have carpet EVERYWHERE and the right one is still so bad 🙁

Thanks for the suggestions! I just ordered the standard elbow protectors for him fromCanine Angels.  Poor Kip was anxious last night from 12-2 and so I have him the trazadone and he slept ok with the cone - i woke up at 7am and his elbow was all gooey and gross. I rushed him to the vet and turns out his pressure sore got infected.  He’s bandaged up and got an antibiotic injection - he’ll see the vet again Monday.  Poor guy :(. Going to take it easy this weekend with him .  I’m thinking last night was anxiety but not feeling good / being uncomfortable to lay down.

Bummer about his elbow, but good for you for staying on top of it.  I'm sure it was uncomfortable for him.  Hopefully he wont need to be sedated  tonight.

Fingers crossed! I took him out for pasta tonight in the stroller and we had a nice date night 🙂 He’s getting stronger and walker about a half of block.  He slipped off a curb though so letting him take it easy tonight / tomorrow.  I feel awful when he slips and almost falls 😕

Oh poor guy! Good thing you got the treatment right away, that should really help, along with the elbow protectors. When you get them, keep an eye on the top straps that wraps over his body. Wyatt developed a tiny rash because it rubbed him in a weird bony spot and I wasn't paying attention. Let us know how they work!

Good idea to have him take it easy. I know the feeling about panicking during those little stumbles. In time, he will get stronger as long as you're good about not letting him overdo things. Great job so far 🙂

Awww, the visual of Kip being chauffeured around for pasta has me grinning ear to ear.  You are taking such good care of him❤  And yes, stumbles here and there will happen, but as Jerry said, he'll get stronger and stumbles will disappear.   It takes about two weeks to get over the surgery itself and about a month to adjust to three legs and get a steady gait with good balance.  He's getting there!

Hugs

Thanks!!!! Every day is a bit better except between 1130-2am.  I can send a video on insta but he just pants so loudly and doesn’t settle.   Nothing has really changed - I’m not sure if it’s phantom pains or his elbow hurts but it’s breaking my heart (and sleep patterns).  We’re going to the vet soon for a bandage change on his elbow so I’ll ask.  Any other ideas? His meds are all the same (he’s almost done with gabapentin) and I’m doing the Trazadone at 9pm before bed.   He’s fine until about 1130 and then the panting starts!

Hi.  Side effects of Trazadone are panting and restlessness, so perhaps that is the cause?  If his behavior is occurring at the same time each night, it seems to me more of a reaction to meds than an environmental issue.  What does your vet say?  ~ Stacy

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

Boy that's an odd one. It doesn't sound like phantom pains so what Stacy said about the Traz could be it. Definitely mention it to the vet and see if there's anything that can be tweaked again so you guys get a solid night's sleep.

I hope his elbow is healing!
