We just rescued a golden puppy who had her leg amputated at 6 wks due to the breeder's children dropping her from a stool. Her leg was shattered so they turned her over to the rescue, where I had been on a waiting list to adopt another tripod. (We lost our 5.5 yr old in 2009). The rescue had no choice but to amputate. Little Kylee is now 10 weeks old and I just want to do everything I can to help her remaining front leg grow to be the strongest and structurally sound as  it can be.

Does anyone have any advice for me. I was told swimming and puppy sit-ups. (Lying on my lap on her back and sit up for a treat (except she goes bonkers for the food :).  Any other suggestions to help too?

Thanks

Hi Karenandthekids, and Kylee too,
I saw your post yesterday, and wanted to get back to it, but with so many posts the last day or so, yours kind of got lost and I had to look for it again.

Oh the poor little pup......so glad you were able to adopt this sweet little girl. From your post, Do I understand correctly that you have had a Tri pup before? Looking at your avatar, Kylee sure looks like a precious little girl.

In regards to strengthening her remaining front leg, since she is still a puppy, she will adapt to her situation a bit quicker than an older dog for sure. However, you can talk to your vet about adding something like Dasuquin to help her joints while growing, and keep her on it always. I am not sure if 4-legged puppies would need it so early, but with her being an amputee so young, plus being a larger breed, it surely would be something to ask your vet. I have never heard of puppy sit ups, but swimming would definitely benefit little Kylee, I would think.

I know others will be joining in to help out with ideas as well, so just wanted to welcome you, and hope to see more updates and pics of your new little girl.

Karen,

First of all how sweet of you for taking her in and second shame on the breeder for not being responsible for the injury and sending her to a rescue. There are several members here that have had pups who needed amp and hopefully they will chime. I just wanted to welcome you to our club.

Wooooaaaah Karen! I see you've been a member since 2012 but this is your first post? Tell us about your first pup too!

Congrats on adopting the new little puppy Kylee, we can't wait to see pics!

We have lots of great examples of how puppies did on three legs..just search through this Forum and also here's a great post about Spree, another young gal who grew into a strong Tripawd:

and we can't forget about Domino!

In general, young puppies will have a few more challenges than older dogs because they still don't have all their coordination down. But they are so resilient and with proper guidance they do great! Check out our Tripawds e-books , especially Loving Life on Three Legs, as well as our Tripawds Gear blog for posts like this: Best of Tripawds Gear Blog Fitness Tips

and this search result has lots of info too:

We will have lots more new rehab information this Fall, stay tuned.

I hope this helps. We look forward to following along on your adventures!

Karen,
How lucky this little baby was adopted by you. I agree with Penny shame on that breeder. Talk to your vet about good nutrition in this growing period.he may be a good candidate when ready for pt as he's maturing to get the best start possible. Good luck and keep us posted on the progress.
