Yee-Haw!! At the end of July we looked forward with great excitement to Sylvie's 9-mo. check-up followed in short order by her 9 mo. ampuversary. She's been going so strong that it never occured to me that it might not go on forever! So, off we go to the oncologist to get the routine x-rays. This time it's different, tho. This time Dr. Valerius comes out to the lobby to give me the latest update and there is a small spot. We go back to the lab and peer at three x-ray views. Only on one is there a small, suspicious spot. It's only on ONE. The doctor says that with a nodule (we don't even utter the "C" word), if it is THE THING it usually shows up on more than one x-ray. So the dr. sends it off to have it looked at by a radiologist.
The radiologist is pretty sure it's a cancer nodule, and evidently sees some other shadowy, suspicious "thing". We can wait 3 weeks and get more x-rays, OR we can begin oral chemotherapy and do another set of x-rays in 3 weeks. Since Sylvia did so well with chemo before, the choice seemed obvious to us. We've started with piroxicam every other day for a week, then if she handles that well, we'll alternate the piroxicam with cyclophosphamide. Then we'll add palladia somewhere in the next several weeks. We are NOT gonna give into the cancer!!!! No, no, no, no, NO!
So why am I posting this in a Shout Out? Because Sylvia does NOT have a cough. She does NOT have shortness of breath. She does NOT get tired easily. She runs and barks and plays with the other dogs and chases the ball. Two weeks ago we even went for a mini hike along a nearby creek. It's been so wet that the trail got a little gooey in areas, but Miss Sylvia carefully stepped AROUND the muddiest sections, trying to keep those three wonderfully hairy feet clean!
Altho it's been only two of the piroxicam capsules so far, she is, as before, totally herself. No vomitting, diarrhea, appetite is as good as ever. This girl ROCKS!!! I know things can change abruptly, but by golly, right now I see our silly sheepdog going on for quite a while. And most importantly, having a super quality of life!! So, anyone beginning the journey or wondering about the road before them, please continue to be inspired by my Sweet, Super Sheepdog Sylvia!!

Sweet Silly Sylvie, the Old English Sheepdog
Diagnosed with osteosarcoma 11/04/2010 at almost 7 years of age * Left hind leg amputated 11/09/2010 * Chemo on 12/10, 12/17, 01/10, 01/31
Sweet Sylvie's earthly journey ended on Nov. 3, 2011, one day short of a year since her diagnosis and 6 days short of her one-year ampuversary. Her family celebrates her life as a sheepdog – ever the puppy, ever silly, ever sweet – and are grateful for our 7 years together.
Thing Shming! Sounds like Sylvie is doing great, thanks for the update.
When we discovered Jerry's mets, we started him on metronomics and K9 Immunity. Don't miss the other metastasis treatment options in the Tripawds Downloads blog too.

Hooray for Sylvie!
(if you are doing Palladia, I have some leftover that I posted about in the Exchange forum. Forget how much i have at the moment but its some 50mg pills and 10mg. We had to stop because Abby was having too many GI issues. I think Admin said I need to see proof of a prescription, but if you want it PM me and we can work that out. Would hate to see it go to waste, so if you have a prescription I can send it to you for free.)
Jackie, Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
The heck with caution- have a big ol' party!!!!
Happy ampuversary Sylvia!!

That says it all.
And Obie is with you on avoiding mud- he doesn't like anything to touch his tender paws. He would levitate if he could .

I'm excited Sylvie is doing so well and will worry about those x-rays some other time. Enjoy each day Sylive, and take mom along for the ride.
