Sally, you were closer than you realized with your last comment in Rocky's Coping with Loss thread. I wound up picking this guy up the day before Thanksgiving.

I'm not sure I'm really ready for this just yet, but too late now. Trying to decide between Baxter or Riley for a name.

How sweet!!! I’m sure he is going to make a great new companion. I will say our other doggie helps to fill some of the void at times....plus it helps me remember they just want to be loved. You did good David. Looks like Rocky guided this one right where he needed to be!!!

I felt like it was going to happen!!!  OOOOOMMMMMDDDDDD!!!!!   DAVID!!!  I'M BLUBBERING WITH TEARS OF JOY OVER HERE!! 🙂 🙂 🙂   I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT!!   Exxite.e t ofr both of you!! 🙂 🙂

Ohhh, you're ready alright!  Rocky wouldn't make this happen at this time with  this dog if you weren't "ready"!  Now, "ready for what" is yet to be revealed!! 🙂 🙂  I know one thing I can see right off the bat, this sweet Baxter Riley NEEDS to be loved!!  He NEEDS to know what love and joy and security feel like!!

I love this first picture.  It shows a sweet doggy who is a bit apprehensive and uncertain.  I can't wait to see the difference  between this first picture of Baxter Riley and a picture a couple of weeks later after he's been loved by you!   You will love having a sog in the house again.  You will love having someone to talk to again...a reason to get up...a reason to hurry home.

Tell us more!!  What's his "story"?    What was it that "clicked" when you first saw him and he you?  What have the first few days and nights been like?  And how has Rocky made his presence know to you duriw these few days?  Has he shown any interest in tennis balls yet?   CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR MORE AND SEE MORE PICTURES!! 🙂  I love the way this guy looks!!  Everything about him is so unique!

CAN'T STOP GRINNING OVER HERE! 🙂 🙂

Hugs

While I type up his story, I guess I'll ask for some help.

Does he look more like a Baxter or a Riley?

Good job Rocky!

There is no reason that Baxter/Riley shouldn't hear you when you call him!

He does look a little nervous in the pick- can't wait to see him settle in.

So on the name- I would vote for Baxter right now, I always like having a name that you can shorten- you could call him Bax as a nickname. But then maybe there is something in his back story to change my mind.

Karen,

I'm leaning Baxter for precisely that reason. I always called Rocky "Rox" and I'd probably wind up calling Baxter "Bax." Riles just doesn't sound as good to me.

So far, every dog I've had has had a five-letter name that ends in Y. Riley would continue that trend. But every previous dog has been a Cocker Spaniel. This one is clearly not a Cocker. Rocky broke the mold for Cocker Spaniels for me, so maybe Baxter needs to set a new path.

I loved life as a tripawd for over three years following right forelimb amputation due to an aggressive and recurrent hemangiopericytoma. I reclaimed my place among the gods and valkyries in Valhalla on November 11th, 2020. My parents miss me tremendously, but I know they'll keep me in their hearts forever... and don't worry, I've approved my mom's use of my Tripawds account.

I brought him home last Wednesday. The first week has been rough. He picked up a bit of kennel cough at the shelter. Thanksgiving night, it was really bad. He was honking up a storm, wouldn't eat, had a bloody nose and you could just tell he felt miserable. So I took him to the emergency vet (thankfully we have two nearby, so I was able to avoid the one where Rocky and I went for the final time - I'm just not ready to go back there yet.)

The emergency vet diagnosed him with an upper respiratory infection in addition to the kennel cough. Since he wouldn't eat, getting him to take medicine was an adventure. He's really really REALLY good about holding pills in his mouth/throat and spitting them back up. We even tried diluting and crushing the pills into liquid with no luck. Thankfully he started eating over the weekend, which has made giving him his meds MUCH easier. He still has a cough, but he's getting better and should be close to 100 percent by this weekend.

As for his story, he was a stray picked up by Animal Services. They listed him on Pet Finder, which is where I found him. I can't really explain it, but something about him piqued my interest. I looked at him one afternoon and when I went back later that night, his profile was gone. I emailed to inquire about what happened to him and was told a local rescue group had picked him up. I eventually emailed them and went to visit him at the shelter. The whole drive out there, I thought "what the hell am I doing?!? I'm not ready for this. I still really miss Rocky."

I can't really say it was love at first sight, but he seemed like a really good dog. I thought about it for a few days and eventually went back to see him with my parents and their dogs in tow to make sure they all got along. And I ended up bringing him home.

I'm not exactly sure what type of dog he is. His paperwork says Australian Cattle Dog/Beagle mix, but the consensus seems to be that there's no Beagle in there. His vet said maybe Australian Shepherd with some Chow. He's estimated to be about 2 years old. Really sweet and friendly so far, although a bit lethargic since he's been sick. Has shown zero interest in balls or toys.

Funny story: I heard him bark the other night. I went to check on him and found him in my room. He was looking up at the top of my armoire, barking at Rocky's Cuddle Clone

Yep, sounding more and more like a Baxter because of all the reasons.   You could give him a middle name that has five letters.  I do like Baxter Riley...Baxter Henry...Baxter Lewis.  Is there a family name in your family tree that woukd be a good middle name?

WELCOME HOME BAX!!  YOU JUST WON THE PUPPY LOTTERY!!

Okay...the ears and head  are maybe "some" Herman Shepard??  The vody, the legs...no clue!! 🙂

He's definitely got some Shepherd - either Australian or German. But obviously something else smaller too.

The vet said they could do a DNA test, but they quoted me $150 for it so I passed.

Oh gosh!  I love how all this unfolded! 'And I love hownyiu actually had to traxk him down...then go visit him in person...and, the rest his history.

Poor thing, so sorry he's been sick though.  You got him out of there just in time.  I doubt he would have received much care at the shelter.

And barking....no, let's change that ro ."communicating" with Rocky's Cuddle Clone !!   Pretty darn special sign if you ask me!  And glad your parents' dogs approve!'

Hmmm...maybe some Corgi??

Where does he sleep?

Can't wait for him to feel better a d to realize he's HOME!
