Today is Isabelle's six month ampuversary. I'm so incredibly grateful to have her happy & healthy today. Last August, I really didn't anticipate reaching this point. I can remember counting the months, wondering what would be going on at Christmas, would we see the New Year together, would she be at the next Super Bowl party (big costume day for her…), how would we manage when the weather got bad, etc. I was preparing myself for the worst, so I've found myself quite unprepared for the best. Over the past two weeks, Isabelle had every diagnostic, short of an MRI, because as soon as something was normal, I focused on a new, sometimes, imaginary problem. Over the past few weeks, she's had some issues with her back leg. I spent so much time worrying about the worst differential, when the elephant was stepping on me….She had a huge surgical resection last month. Of course it's easier to keep the leg flexed! Serious problems don't disappear when there's a friend to play with, a rabbit to be chased, or walking in the treadmill faster & longer than ever before!
I've been very emotional about reaching this milestone, somewhat unscathed…This entire journey with Isabelle has been a series of crappy events, over which, for some reason, the stars all lined up. We have been so blessed.
Isabelle spent the eight months prior to her OSA diagnosis, in aggressive rehab for her L-S arthritis, so physically she was still in terrific shape, with the exception of her L rear leg. She'd lost an incredible amount of muscle mass in that limb, making her amputation easy because of the diminished blood flow. All those months seemed like preparation. Had her OSA been in the R leg, she wouldn't have been able to walk. Her recovery was lightening fast (with, what I'm certain, was some very annoying pre & post-op micro management, on my part. Thank you to a very patient surgeon & anesthesiologist!) and she was up & active from the time she got home and back in rehab immediately. When her MST was diagnosed last month, the only reason she was able to have a successful wide resection was because of it's location and the well developed muscle mass in that leg. We're unbelievably fortunate to have unlimited access to not only our rehab facility, but two others, if we needed them….the expense will soon have us living in our car, but Isabelle can run!!
I don't know what next month, next week or tomorrow has planned for us. I know that today, my sweet girl is healthy and happily playing with her best friend, who came to stay for her celebration. It's time to dry my tears, put my anxiety to rest and savor these moments, so that's what I am doing. I am taking the next two nights off (something I never do, since I only work on Friday & Saturday) to spend with the dogs. I'm always saving my time "in case Isabelle gets sick". Well, now I'm staying home because she's well and she will be thrilled!
The dogs are having cooked chicken (neither of them live in a household where meat is ever cooked, both think it only comes raw…they are beside themselves with joy!!) and broccoli, they love it, I don't know why… Isabelle will dance for broccoli!
Many thanks to everyone on this site. No one else would understand.

Wow, Isabelle. You are one LOVED girl. Congratulations on your 6 month ampuversary. I can remember so clearly being at that point and feeling the anxiety along with the blessing of Trouble still being with us. We were past the 1 year mark before the day came as I sat outside with Trouble, that I realized I wasn't afraid she was going to die. Once you are able to accept that as your new reality, life becomes so much better.
Today we celebrate with the beautiful Isabell on a job well done. Trouble loves broccoli, so maybe she will join in a chicken/broccoli dinner.
Shanna & Spirit Trouble ~ Trouble gained her wings 3/16/2011, a 27 1/2 month cancer survivor, tail wagging. RIP sweetheart, you are my heart and soul. Run free at Rainbow Bridge.

Happy ampuversary Isabelle, 6 months does deserve some good eatin', but I wouldn't share it with those snooty cats, you did all the work!!!!! And Cynthia, take a deep breath and enjoy her good health, I know what this journey does to us, we put everything under a microscope once this crap starts, but relax and enjoy the moments, there's no time table here, deal with things as they come, don't worry about tomorrow. Trouble is living proof, over 2 years and counting, have a great couple days off, Big paws up, Spirit Gus and Dan
My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
Let us delcare this "Cooked Chicken Day" for all dawgs in honor of Miss Isabelle's pawesome ampuversary! Congrats Isabelle!
That video is darling and no way in heck is it boring watching you on the water treadmill. You sure look like you're working hard and loving it. My Mom says she wishes when she worked out she could enjoy it as much as you look like you are.
Cynthia, you are such a conscientious pawrent...it's hard not to become obsessive over every little thing, and you've done a great job at focusing on what's important and coming back around to celebrating the moment with your special girl. Congrats to you too! Just as Isabelle has learned to adapt to life on three legs, you've learned to adapt to living in the now. That's no small accomplishment either.
Paws up for a great ampuversary celebration this weekend! We're there with you in spirit.

Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Happy Ampuversary!!! I LOVE that video! You can tell she's one happy pup. Isabelle, someone's gotta say it...why do you eat cat food when it would taste so much better if you just ate a......oh, nevermind (and I'm mostly kidding by the way) You are a very special girl!
Hugs and sloppy kisses,
Lisa, Ranger (who thinks you're really cute), and Spirit Sadie
Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end. On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.
