Thanks for making this space for us to tell the stories of our dogs and cats. This may help me see patterns or recall details that got overlooked. I started something similar when I adopted a parrot, and that has been very useful to look back in time and see milestones and clues that seemed insignificant at the time.
I lost my sheltie after 13 years together June 1st and could not stand life without a dog. I found Bell on a rescue site called Mutt Misfits in July 2020.
Her name was Mayday, which she got from the urgent situation in which they found her. She was found injured, likely hit by a car, somewhere near okc and the rescue scooped her out of the shelter and got her into their program. They tried to save her rear left leg at first, but amputated a few days later. She went into a foster home right away for recovery. They estimated her to be about 6 months old.
She was there two months when I was wandering through adoptable dogs. I don't live in the city, any city, and I have a weird schedule. It was difficult to meet with people or even trade emails in real time, plus covid restrictions, it was a weird and tough time. It just so happened that her foster mom is one street east of me, and she let me drive right over to her home to meet "May" in her yard. She wiggled right over and I was allowed a little ear rub and tossed her ball while her mom was saying, "she just went right up to you." I consider myself fluent in dog, so I didn't think there was anything odd and that she was just a little bit shy. She came over for a home visit later that week, and then she was home a day or two later!
I haven't ever had such a scared, traumatized dog to care for! She was terror barking the day her foster mom came to drop off her rabies tag. It dawned on me, finally, how odd it was that she just walked right up to me, ball, tail wag, and wiggle. No one gets a pass when entering her line of sight! It's made it difficult to find acceptable socialization, activities, and really everything else. Just difficult.
So, 7 months together now, and I found my way here to research some weakness that's been showing up sporadically for about a month.
I'll add more to the story later.

We are so glad you decided to share more about her! Thank you, it's good to know background, and such a joy to see how she picked you out just for her. That's a very special bond you two have. And the more you figure her out, the stronger it will become. As I mentioned earlier, our Wyatt Ray was very similar to Bell and after 12 years I can say that our relationship was mutually rewarding. Every dog has so much to teach us, even when we don't necessarily want those lessons.
I can't wait to see photos. This is how adding images works. Holler if you'd like help OK?

Sorry about the loss of your special companion for THIRTEEN years. No doubt your Sheltie sent you Bell, aka MayDay❤ And clearly Bell knew you were to be her furever home by the way she first greeted you!
Thanks for giving sweet Bell a chance for a hapoy and .ove filled life.

Photo test. Bell and the puppy having a nap.
The hard thing about it is leaving the page deletes any text. I'm using an android phone.

Here's a link to an ig account I turned over to the animals. It's called ducksaga

That will take you to the first picture her foster mom texted me, and you can see the rest there.
I'm using an android, and you can't leave the screen once you've started a post...the page refreshes to the thread, and you have to start from scratch.
I'll try to get all of her goofy shots posted as I go along.

I see why you fell in love!

Thanks for letting us know. I was unaware of this issue. When this happens are you opening a new browser tab, or an all new window?

All I have to do is leave the window, it doesn't matter if I'm choosing a different chrome browser tab, opening Instagram, anything navigating away from the page just seems to reset the page to the thread and the text box doesn't survive the process.

Ok thanks for that info. It doesn’t happen on an iPhone or Android tablet so this is definitely an Android phone thing. If we get our hands on a device we will give it a go.
Please feel free to start a new topic in Tech Support and we will investigate. Sorry about that!

Hi. I'm posting this reply using my android phone (Samsung Galaxy S10). I was able to type this entire reply, leave the post, navigate to other apps like Instagram and to other open tabs, and return to this post without having lost any text, so I'm not sure if the issue is specifically android related. 🙂
Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com
No problem, I just have to remember to get links before I start a post, or come back to paste them in a new one.
Thanks Stacy. It wouldn't surprise me if it's specific to my phone.

FWIW and I can't even believe I'm trying to add something, but I fo think I sorta' kinda' maybe, understand a teeny bit about Mayday's issue. I have a vrry antiquated samsung S2 tabvlet Android.
If I'm in the middle of a reply and want to leave it to search something, ie, I have to "cooy" have to copy reply what I've typed and come back and 'paste" rather than start over.
Then again, this may have no bearing in any way on your situation. Plus, you're dealing with someone who doesn't know jack💩 about computers, techie terminology, Etc

Hmmm. Thanks for sharing Sally.
Yeah, please do start a Tech Support Topic so we can keep an eye on this and others can chime in with their Android experience.

I think it might be interesting to break down Bell's behavior issues. They definitely impact her physical activities and continue to dictate her social calendar too. I think we're lucky she's still so young in both respects too. She's flexible and full of energy, and thankfully whatever trauma she has endured was relatively short lived compared to the time we have to rehab and train and build confidence.
I think I'll talk about play first. She's still got that puppy playfulness trying to break through her fearful outlook. It's been a lot of fun introducing toys and getting to know her preferences and play styles. It's taken a lot of positive reinforcement and quite a lot of learning what hers are and how to adjust my style to hers. I'm always on the lookout for opportunities to build her confidence and reward things that might lead to a calm and happy demeanor.
Her zoomies have been my biggest worry as far as injuries are concerned. She was just 8 weeks post op when I brought her here, and she had been very much contained for that time, mostly leashed, and car trips were about 45 minutes to her rescue's vet for check ups. Despite my vet tech education and lots of training experience, I have discovered big knowledge gaps about physical rehab and exercises. It was a couple of decades ago, so it's not really a surprise that we didn't get much instruction about post operative care beyond wound care and basic reinjury risks. I fully expected excessive wear on her joints, arthritis, and mobility issues from the various compensation positions for balance and movement. I didn't expect at all to have methods to help her prevent those. It's given me quite a boost in hope and the extra opportunities to bond and train for specific exercises that will help her mobility and likely her confidence too.
I'll admit that I can't wait for a little less throwing her head around like goofus, though, I've got another sore lump on my eyebrow this time!

Isn't is wonderful?! I love how far this has come in the last 20 years. Did you see Dr. Waterhouse's Canine Rehab on Demand Program for Tripawds? There's a good place to get started with her, it's an awesome course and as a former (?) vet tech I know you'll appreciate his approach.
OK you've gotta show us some of those zoomies of hers!
