Two years ago my shepherd mix Bella ruptured both Acl's in one week. We under went surgery mrit which she had an allergic reaction to something administered during surgery. She went into shock. She contracted an infection in the incision which my vet went in a month later cleaned out the incision. All was well, at least that's what I thought. Bella and I did water therapy 3 times a week but was never able to regain full function. July 2012, Bella was anemic. Same week my lhaso lost his battle with kidney failure. Bella received a blood transfusion, and was on prednisone for 6 months. The knee that had the surgery hen blew up like a block of wood. It was cultured and cultured but no one could pin point an infection. He get then did an exploratory surgery ruling out cancer. However the infection came back on the skin. We finally resolved that t my knowledge as it has not been apparent in 6 months now. We opted for acupuncture which did well. However we recently sought out the services of an orthopedic surgeon, he said her leg is far past point of knee replacement. Yet her right leg is now a candidate for knee replacement. As for the left. He said arthrodesis is an option or amputation. He wants to move forward with arthrodesis on the left to provide support til total knee replacement on right is healed then possible amputation of left. Bella now 7, is a happy happy baby whom wants to go go go. I want her to have the ability to go at her leisure. Has anyone had arthrodesis? Any good results? One side of me doesn't want her to go thru unnecessary surgeries to end up wi a poor result. The vet thinks without going thru these steps, the way her arthritis is progressing. She may not see the end of this year.

Wow, Bella has had a tough couple of years!
So the surgeon wants to do a bone fusing procedure on the left knee to stabilize it and reduce pain, then once that heals do a knee replacement on the right knee, then if needed amputate the left leg.
With such a complicated set of issues have you thought about getting a second opinion? Not that your surgeon is wrong, but sometimes someone else has different ideas.
I do not have any experience with arthrodesis, and I don't remember any discussions here about it but someone here might have some experience. You could also post in the ask a vet forum for another medical opinion.
I do have some experience with arthritis- my 13 year old quad-pug Tani has been battling arthritis since she was 6. We are using joint supplements, gabapentin as a pain med, and adequan to keep her moving now. Have you discussed managing the left knee arthritis with meds while the right knee is replaced? (unfortunately adequan is temporarily unavailable)
Just for your information, we have had some pups with orthopedic issues after amputation. One I can think of right now is Murphy who was hit by a car and had a rear amp then a total hip replacement.
Hopefully someone here has some insights for you. Keep us posted on Bella and your decisions.
Karen
Goodness gracious! You and sweet Bella have been through so much! Clearly a very loved dog who has w wonderful advocate for a mom! Brave, strong pup! Brave, strong, mom!
I have NO specific advice on your situation other than dittoing what Karen said and that would be a second, or even third opinion! This sou ds very complicated with Belle and especially with all the surgery/recovery challenges shemas had.
Please know that we are here for you and understand the agony over making decisions that are best for our pets. You are doing everything you can, doing your research and you will find an answer that's best for Bella.
What a trooper you both are!
Maybe others can chime in with more specific info. In tne meantime, remember, Bella doesn't know she has any issues and is just living each second vlissfully happy beig a dog! Hugs all around!
Keep us posted! Would love to see apic of Bella!
