Hellooooo

Old timers will know me. It's been a fair amount of time since I've been here. So for the old timers, you can skip the next couple paragraphs and cut to the update.

Cora's story- Cora's mom was a stray and something really horrible happened to Cora in the womb or at birth. She suffered brain damage and her right front leg was deformed. Some of the effects of the brain damage are that she is blind, has numbness in half her muzzle, a week bite and general clumsiness. She shouldn't have survived but Cora is a stubborn girl with a strong will to leave. When Cora was about 6 weeks, mom and the pups were picked up and taken to a shelter. She did ok at first but really started to struggle. They took her for *some* testing and then stuck her in a foster home. They didn't dig too deep into what was going on with her. They made the decision to amputate her leg and I took her in as a foster while she was still recovering from that. It was very clear to me she had major issues and that she was a huge fighter who wouldn't give up so I adopted her so she'd get her chance.

She couldn't walk much at all, and only went in circles. She cried constantly and didn't like to be touched at all. she had troubles eating because of the numbness in her muzzle, blindness and weak bite. She kept learning and fighting and even then, when she was pretty dang miserable, would play. So I began to take her to various vets and specialists who weren't hopeful. The only one who gave guarded hope was the neurologist.  He said her brain damage was not degenerative so she wouldn't get worse, he just wasn't sure how much she could learn. A few months after her first amp she fell, badly injuring her stump. It was really horrible. it's rare to have a stump left on the front, and with Cora it was a huge mistake. it was inevitable that she would fall on it and injure it. In a way, it was a good thing because it turned out the stump had been a chronic source of pain and with it gone Cora was a much happier girl. She began to learn and grow.

Cora now- Cora is doing great. She loves being outside and exploring. She does that on 3 legs. We are on hiatus from her cart until I can figure out how to control the dam thing. Cora is like a hyperactive drunk when she's in the cart. She zigs and zags and does circles and I can't keep up and she has crashed it a few times. She travels with me and adjusts really well except when there are scary dogs around (Thanksgiving was a bit rough). She has food allergies and acid reflux and those issues worry me more than her being a tripawd. She still continues to learn. This summer, her big adventure was wandering all around finding things she could get her front leg up on. She gets along with both my cats and most of the time with Floyd. We had a pitbull living with us for several months and she got along ok with her, but she found it stressful when the pitt and floyd would play. There's another dog that comes over fairly regularly and it's pretty annoying with Cora but Cora handles herself well. Cora also likes visiting the dog park. She has her bad days when she is out of sorts, most of those are related to either over stimulation or food allergies. As she ages she becomes more and more cuddly. She is not the dog who hated to be touched and she demands attention from me. She also likes getting pats from other people as long as they know to talk to her. I don't usually have to warn her I am patting her, but I have to tell her "I'm letting go" because she leans all her weight into my pats and if I just let go, she splats which sort of ruins the moment.

By and large she is easier than Floyd who still is reactive and ...well.. insane. For example, people are letting off fireworks tonight and Cora is fine. Floyd is a wreck. So, there's the update. For those wondering if your dog can handle amputation, think about Cora. Imagine a tipsy, blind, 3-legged tripawd. If she can do it, your dog probably can too!

How adorable is your sweet Cora?!!! What a great story, and welcome back to you !! My own journey with my Polly was just beginning when you became a member here of this amazing community.....although I didn't actually become a member myself till the end of August 2013.

Cora surely has had obstacles along the way, but in true canine determination, she has conquered just about all of them, what an amazingly resilient girl she is!
Plus, she definitely has a great human caretaker full of love, patience, and strong belief in Cora overcoming all these curve balls thrown her way.

Thanks for sharing her story, and these great pics with us, and she absolutely is loving life!
Happy New Year!

Yay Chris.  Welcome back.  Thank you for retelling Cora's story.  We have missed you around here.  A lot of us have been wondering how you & Ms Cora have been doing.  So AWESOME to see how far you 2 have come in this journey.   What Chris left out of this story is the fact that she was told to put Cora down.  She gave Cora the change to excel and look at her now.

I love everyone of these pictures Chris.  It goes to show how one person who gives a dog a chance to make it can make all the difference in the world to that baby.   Please give Cora some pats for Angel Sassy & I.

Thank you all. Cora is amazing. I will try to post some more pictures. Except for when she is sleeping, she's pretty much always on the move and that makes it tricky. I really wanted to get pictures of her peanut butter face last night, but no luck.

The only time she was getting peanut butter was when she got pills, she'd already rejected in the pill pocket. So Croa decided she didn't like peanut butter and if I offered it to her, in true Cora fashion, she'd give a growl. However the other day I had peanut butter I noticed she seemed interested. And last night I was giving Floyd peanut butter and Cora wanted some. It's hard to lap up peanut butter when you can't see and your muzzle doesn't have normal sensation so she ended up wearing some. It made me happy to see her enjoying it so much.

I have also been working on how her and I navigate when I am helping her. She doesn't like it but she's getting the hang of it. We are making this change for me, but I think it will be better for her too in the long run.

Oh silly Cora, don't you know ALL dogs love peanut butter? Floyd is a good teacher!

Chris, I wish there was some way you could video the two of you on a walk, that would be interesting to see. Just a thought.

You are such a special dog momma, what a couple of very lucky dawgs you have. I know they appreciate all you do for him.

Well, one of the things Cora taught me is that I need to let go of my expectations. So, we don't really "walk". When Cora go out, it's mostly about me standing around while she smells and listens. Unless I'm in a *very, very* patient mood we don't go far at all because that's not the interesting thing for Cora. Being out is interesting. If you think of how good a normal dog's sense of smell is and how good her's must be it's brain boggling. So we take a few steps and then she stops and smells and smells and smells and smells and listens and circles and smells and listens and thinks and smells and listens and smells and thinks some more and then maybe we can take another few steps. And if we go much distance, we have to go back and repeat all that process except she usually doesn't want to go back so then add in her digging in and resisting. Then you have the times we stop for the person or the car passing by, the dogs barking from their yards, the birds, the breeze and it's just such an interesting world for Cora! I have to practice breathing deep and repeating to myself "this is for Cora. This is not about how far we get". When she starts to nip at my pants legs, my patience tends to unravel a bit. There are those times when I have had enough and Cora ends up getting carried. And hopefully she's tired when this happens or she's going to protest noisily ... which gets the neighborhood dogs barking, which gets her more riled up, which means Floyd starts barking, which gets Cora more riled up, which gets the neighborhood dogs barking... did I mention I have to be in a very patient mood to walk her?

Now the time someone should have had a camera to record us was the time my cat escaped and tried to follow us. Every time Cora would stop he would stop. In the middle of the road!! I was not happy. I'd try to go get him and Cora would protest. I tried to drop her leash for a second to get him and she headed off into the ditch (sure, then she moves). Occasionally the cat, Fezz, would come and rub up against my legs just to remind me he was out when he wasn't supposed to be.

Heee hee my gosh Chris you have such a way with this special girl, and your whole pack too! What lessons this girl is teaching you, lots more than a regular Tripawd parent gets. I see what you mean about:

it’s just such an interesting world for Cora! I have to practice breathing deep and repeating to myself “this is for Cora. This is not about how far we get”.

When it comes to the Tripawd lifestyle, things like walks are so different after starting the journey, and lots of us (myself included) have a difficult time remembering that it's not about how far but how fun it is for the dog. I think the way you phrased it is so perfect, it should be taped near every Tripawd parent's leash wall.

Well, you guys are just amazing, you truly are. Keep us posted, we love hearing about your wild and not-so-wild adventures.

...By the way, how is Floyd doing?
