Tripp is about 6 months old. A week ago I got a plea from the shelter asking me to take him in. The moment I saw his picture there was no doubt he was going to be here. He had been found as a stray and had a very bad break to his right leg. They felt he needed to have it amputated. After amputation he came down with parvo. The shelter whom I am very very grateful to, treated him and got him well then brought him to our rescue today. He had his amputation about a week and a half ago. He currently uses his fore-paw to walk on not just his paw. He has a vet appointment tomorrow to see what we can do to help him. I am new to have a 3 legged dog, so any help or tips are greatly appreciated. He is doing great with my other dogs, but gets tired pretty quickly. We hope that we will be able to get him his own support harness, they look wonderful!
Okay, figured it out 🙂
I think..
Notice how he is standing on his front foot
Welcome to tripawds. It is so sweet of you to take in Tripp and give him his forever home. I am trying to picture how he is walking and it just eludes me! Is the amputation of his right fore leg or back leg?
Tripp is going through the hard part right now. After the first couple of weeks he should do pretty well. My Emily could still jump on the trampoline after losing her leg!
There are a few things that I can think of that might help prepare you. First, I would suggest raising his food dish, especially if the amputation is a fore leg. Secondly, Because of the additional strain on the remaining legs I would suggest a good joint supplement. Finally, if you have non-carpeted floors it would be good to use some rugs so that Tripp isn't slipping all over the place, possibly injuring himself.
Spirit Cherry's dad, Bob, who is on vacation, would advise you to find something that Tripp enjoys and use it to feed his spirit.
Post and let us know how the vet appointment went!

Hmmm.... it appears as though you may have attempted to delete your duplicate post by editing out the comment. Well, we deleted the other one so now they're both gone! Sorry 'bout that.
Anyway, welcome to Tripawds! Bless you for saving Tripp. We look forward to finding out more about him. Since you have pictures hosted on your facebook page, you can follow these simple instructions for embedding photos in forum posts.

Welcome - I just adopted a pup (and his sister!) from our shelter, who also lost his leg due to a bad break and the vet wrapping it too tightly. He is going on almost 3 weeks post op now. My guys a lot younger (11 weeks today!) so he's coping pretty well - we still have a lot to learn.
I'm also curious as to which leg he's missing? And I also can't picture how he's walking
thank you for the advice on the rugs and raised bowls, I have him on glucosamine, but I am sure the vet will give us something better tomorrow. My entire home is wood floors so I am going to need a whole lot of rugs. YIKES!
I posted pics above, finally figured it out whoohoo!
Yep, good supplements will have glucosamine - not that I'm one of the experts here as far as vet care. But Gerry's vet recommended Dasuquin, when I asked him about protecting his joints, and I have heard it recommended here as well (I think I spelled it right, I'm afraid I'm too lazy to go check the bottle this evening).
Poor Tripp, it seems like his front foot might be hurting (a toe maybe?) and so he's trying to avoid putting all the weight on it? Just a theory from someone with no veterinary expertise. I'm sure Tripp's vet will figure it out.
Emily's Mom made great suggestions. Can't really think of any more. But as questions/concerns pop up for you and Tripp, this is a great resource for info and support.
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.
Videos and pics of Gerry's pawesomeness can be found at: http://gerry.tripawds.com
Bless you first for adopting! And second for adopting a dog that needs some extra care. I like to think of them as our special babies!
He's a beautiful boy and looks like he's full of love!
Keep us updated on the paw issue!

I can see why you could not say no.....what a beautiful boy Tripp is!! He is lucky that a loving human came for him. It looks like he is right at home from the photos. I hope you will get some help from the vet regarding the way he is walking.

Tripp is doing well today, his vet appointment was just what I expected. He needs time to adjust. The vet thinks that his front leg has a hyperextended ligament. She says there is not a whole lot to do about it. With him on Dasuquin and doing therapy, it should help. She didnt see any damage to his leg at all which was good news...I would love to get him a support harness, but he is still a growing pup and I am sure he will grow out of it quickly.
Its really cold here today, he has been keeping off of it a lot and not so patient with the other dogs. Thankfully the other dogs can take a hint. I think he's a bit sore. He is curled up with my husband at the moment.2 cute! don't forget to log in so your posts publish immediately.
