Today we mark our five-month ampuversary
We are also headed out today on Sam's first road trip since Christmas! We are headed down south to I-o-way to do a race and visit my parents...and I have to admit, I'm a bit nervous.
For one, we've been a bit...off...the last couple of days. Nothing obvious or specific, juts...off. A little less somethin' somethin, I suppose. It's been 10 days since our last acupuncture, and I am wondering if that might not be part of the problem. Our ER clinic stopped offering it, which sucks. The vet who was doing it, though, wants to keep helping Sam, but A) she is out of town and B) going forward, we will now have to meet clandestinely, under cover of darkness, in some hidden locale (well, not REALLY, but it does need to be not at the clinic, and this way it sounds more glamourous...). So there's that.
Unnecessary reason for worry #2: lately, I've been avoiding putting Sam in my car (a Highlander), b/c I have to lift him up to do so. The lifting in and of itself isn't an issue, but he seems to have a lot of back and abdominal tenderness lately...whether that's from a combo of his lipomas and arthritis or from something else more ominous, I don't know, but he's not a fan of us having to hoist him by his own petard, as they say. And he won't use a ramp. BUT we are not taking the tiny Saturn all that way, so we shall have to lift gently.
I also don't like being away from our own vets. Funny that I was pretty okay going on vacation and leaving him at home--our sitter is our vet tech, and we live a block from our vet, as well as the ER. No worries. But having him away from home right now...eh. Pawsitive thoughts, and we won't need to worry about it!
ANYHOO: I shouldn't be so glum! We are at five months. And in March, we walked into this knowing there was a better-than good chance we wouldn't get two or three. So we will accept this "slower" day for what it is, a small dip in the road that we probably would never have noticed before, so why stress it now. And we shall spend the day getting treats and pets from co-workers (I brought the dogs in with me to the office today) and then enjoy the road trip to Grandma's house for some spoilage (Grandpa makes doggy breakfast with PB toast and bacon grease sometimes )... and, as always, continue to bask in our slow-moving tidal wave of awesomeness-with-a-hint-o'-truculence for as long as it pleases us to do so.
Here we are at work (Crabby Sadie has her ears-down-disapproval-up face going on :p)!

GREAT informstive and fun post! Lways a delight toread!
And HUGE, HUGE, HUGE reason ro celebrate:-) ' Miracle Sam, you are what this whole journey is about!! Smene's gotta' take on the role as "Miracle Dog"......and tag.....you're it!! GREAT JOB!
Now, I know I've mentioned this to your mom before, but think you have a little "senioritis" going on over ther. See, we don't have too much experience around here with senior dogs with amputation with osteo., etc. etc. So we don't always recognize the symptons And "senioritis" is treatale--maybe not particularly cureable! But it's a great "disease" to have around here! It's actualy so ething we all aspire for our dogs to have! Weird, huh Sam?
Meghan, I think it's perfectly ormal to fret about all sorts of things ANYTIME a vacation is i voleved. It just seems to heighten things a touch. Then, once you get on the road and start relaxing and releasng the stress of the everuday grind, it will become enjoyable. Sam would rather be with you regardless! Once he realizes he's ot going to the vet but is headed for PB and bacon grease......YUMMY!!
By the way, the notos (And you ow I'm a photo expert!) are w derful! akes me want to stretch out and take a snooze with Sammy after giving hi soe belly rubs! He has a fine looking belly----whether food induced or pred. induced----it's a fine lookng belly:-)
Where do his grandparents live? Everywhere in the South is hot and humid right ow! So stay cool and take ple ty of ice cream breaks!
We expect....NO!.....Lovi gy DEMAND photo updates alng the way!! Realy! We'll all be lookng for them. You are special to us!
Alright Miracle Sam Dog, we've got to heat up tne pan, plob in so e bacon and mix it all up with peanut vutter (I'm puking over here!) and make yo a nice FIVE MNTH AMPUVERSRY CAKE!!
This calls for a few extra smiley faces!
I assume Crabb Sadie is go g too! She's very pretty girl.-..even when crabby!
WNDERFUL JOB SAM! WOMDERFUL JOB MOM!! Looking forward to more ampuversaries.....but we gotta' switch to ice cream Sammy.....okay! Okay! We'll add bacon grease!!

HOPPY HOPPY HOPPY HOPPY HOPPY (that's FIVE!) Ampuversary Sammerz!
Can we come to grandma's house too? Or she can just FedEx us her special breakfast if having the entire Tripawds community at her house is a wee bit much.
Ok, I'm thinking maybe you're just taking things slow because well it is summer after all, and it's HOT and heck, you're a geriatric senior Tripawd! That's my thinking.
Anyhow, I hope you have a great time and you can see your black market acupuncturist as soon as you get home.
P.S. Tell your folks they can try lifting you using the old canvas grocery bag trick!
PPS: Sadie's not crabby, I'll bet she's just mad that she's not the center of attention.

Happy 5 month Sam!! The toughest senior tripawd I know. It's OK to have the occasional off day or two. A guy just gets tired hopping around on 3 legs!!
Happy Happy!!

High fives for FIVE!!!!! Enjoy the road trip.. I am sure Sammy will love the adventure!!!
Franklin, he was the Happiest Dog on Three Legs! Diagnosed 09/26/2012 with Osteosarcoma, amputated 12/4/2012. Had a wonderful 5 1/2 months painfree until he ran for the Bridge on 5/15/2013. Hoppy Ampuversary Sam you handsome thing you!
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
Hoppy Five Month! That's fantastic!
Over the river and through the woods to Grandmothers house we go.....
Hope the trip is a fresh fun adventure filled with all new smells and treats!
I totally understand the acupuncture thing. Atlas has been without for two weeks now and I can tell his chi is needing a fix.
Thanks, everyone!
We had a great weekend visiting my parents. Sam was all revved up and definitely had a good time. My parents were amazed at how only having three legs hasn't slowed him down at all (but it would be hard to get any slower :p).
They were especially impressed by his two remaining tricks: high five and humping Sadie ...both of which you'd think a front amp would struggle with, but no. (In fact, Sam feels that missing a front leg has enhanced his humping capabilities, as he can get in even closer :p)
My dad did suggest given Sam's coat condition (er, lack of coat?), we could take him down to the race with us, prop him on the street corner with a tin cup and maybe get him to beg for change and pay for gas money...but he was pretty much kidding :p
Other (good natured) suggestions for him:
Walk-on role as the Chupacabra in an X-Files reunion
Crash the Xolo or Chinese Crested categories at Crufts
Starring role in a new SyFy flick: "Attack of the Three-legged Zombie Mutant Sewer Rats...They'll steal your cheese, eat your brains, and then hump your leg!"
