So further good news - Theo has been discharged from the vets he is still on Gabapentin but is down to 1 tablet every 2 days for another week and then fingers crossed that's it.  His fur is starting to grow back and things are going wel - the vet said that the knobbly boney bit it where the muscle she stiched over it have pulled back slighty which she was a bit dissapointed about but she said it may not cause and future problems but if he seems to catch it a lot they can do a quick further surgery to stitch the muscle back into place again.

We let him back outside last week and the first day he climbed onto a shed and over the fence and went for a  wander but came back a couple of hours later and since then hes been staying in the garden (it was almost like he had to show himself that he couldn't do everything he used to and would get tired more easily), so more often than not now you can find him sunning himself on the decking.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone, this is a great resource and showed us that he could continue to live a happy healthy life on 3 paws.
