Our Lab/Collie female, Lucky, had a golfball size osteosarcoma tumor come up on her front left paw within a 32 hour period. That was 2 weeks ago.  We've opted to amputate because xrays show that it hasn't visably spread to her lungs and the bone is still in tact.  The tumor actually moves, ever so slightly, side to side.  It hasn't even attached to the bone yet.  We feel this offers her the best chance of being free from the cancer.

I'm very excited about finding this forum as I'm sure we'll need some help.  I just purchased Without Regret by Susan Neil.  The reviews I read said that it would be helpful.  Will it be?  Thanks for reading this and offering me a place for help.

Thanks for the comments about the site Tim! Glad you find it helpful. And it sounds like Lucky will do just fine, since you acted quickly.

Without Regret was the first book my people read when going through the ordeal of my amputation. They say it helped them greatly!

Give Lucky a big hug for us, she is lucky indeed.

Hi Tim, Hi Lucky, welcome to our family. We will be praying for you next week...you will be amazed at how quickly Lucky will bounce back, but make sure you give it a few weeks...prepare yourself emotionally for the shock of the first time you see her and prepare her living space with some of the extras that she will need to expedite her recovery and make it more comfortable and remember...always stay upbeat and positive - they mirror our emotions. And most importantly...keep us posted, we are here for you to help you through this.

There is so much information on this website; I hope it helps you and yes, "without regret" is an amazing book - you will love it.

Love and prayers,

Zeus and Mom (Heather)

Tim,

It sounds like you caught Lucky's tumor very early!  My dog Tazzie also had osteosarcoma in that area and she had her leg removed Aug. 26th.  I am very amazed at how fast she has returned to doing her normal things.  She wants to try the stairs but she is a very big dog so I think that will have to wait a while.

Are you going to do chemo?  We have our first appointment for that on Sept 15th.

Good luck with your surgery, and remember that we are here if you have questions or concerns.

Hi Lucky, We wish you the best on your upcoming surgery. I know it is scary but you will bounce back in no time. It's such a difficult decison to make and so many tears and frustration come when you first hear the "C" word. Zeus had some great words of advise especially about keeping positive and preparing her living space. The first week was hard for all of us but Cody's courage and determination shined through. He is doing really well so far and he brings smiles to our faces every single day and we try to bring smiles to his too! We will be thinking about you.

Hi Lucky...we're praying for you today pal...we know the next couple weeks are going to be a bit challenging, but hang in there pal - it's all worth it. Tell your dad to try not to worry...and to be sure to keep us posted on your recovery and any questions or concerns he may have.

We love ya buddy!

Love Zeus
