Hello everyone, I am new to this site. My dog Sami jus't came home today, she had her right front let removed yesterday. Sami is a shephard mix who we have had for about 12 years now. We adopted her back in 96 from a local pound and since that day she has been apart of the family. Recently we noticed a small bump on her leg and the doctor said it looked like an infection and gave us some medication for her and told us to bring her back if it got worse. Well a week later we noticed her paw and leg were swelling up, thats when we went back to the doctor. They found out it was cancer and gave us the option of removing her leg. I went along with it, scared that the cancer would spread elsewhere, so yesterday she had her surgery. I was a little nervous for her and myself when she came home today, she is adjusting to walking and has fell a few times today. Her back legs are not in the best shape but they seem to be holding her up well. In 10 days we go back to have the stitches removed, and I hope that by then she will be well on her feet.

Thanks for joining the discussion Trixie! Best wishes for Sami's full speedy recovery. A few face-plants are normal. She just needs time to recuperate, rest and rebuild her strength. Be sure to read our top ten concerns posts and use the forum search to find plenty of advice and questions answered already.

Trixie, I'm sorry to have to welcome you on the cancer road, but so happy you found this wealth of support for you and Sami.  There is tons of useful info here and always someone willing to give you that little boost you need when you're feeling defeated.  As a friend of mine says “Cancer is a word, not a sentence.”

All tripawds recover at a different rate, but once past the recovery you'll see a happy, adjusted Sami.

Hi Trixie and Sami,

Welcome to the Tripawd family!  Sending pawsitive thoughts and prayers to your family for a speedy and uneventful recovery.  The next couple weeks will be ruff, but once the initial healing process is over, Sami will be great!!  I know I had a few freak outs during Shadow's recovery.  But now he's 7 weeks post-ampuation, and getting stronger and more amazing everyday that passes.  You will find great support and inspiration in this forum,  I know I have.  It really is a family.

Keep us updated on Sami,  stay pawsitive, and before you know it she will be back to her old self and then some!  Tripawds are truly amazing!!

Take care!

Tina and Spirit Shadow

Welcome to our special family - you will never be alone in this journey…when it brings you joy, lessons learned, questions, struggles, sleepless nights, love and tender moments peace and even sadness. We share everything here.

We wish you guys a speedy and non-eventful recovery. Sami will need the 2 weeks to rest and recover - this is major surgery, but these guys are just truly amazing how they adjust. Wait and see.

Sending healing thoughts and pawsitive energy your way - please keep us posted on how Sami AND you are doing.

Lots of love,

Heather and Zeus
