It's early Monday and today is the 6th – and last – chemo for HRH Perfect Princess Roxie Louise Roo Roo of Kemp, my almost 12-year old Samoyed. I found and joined Tripawds in March the day Roxie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and we had just decided to go with a back leg amputation + chemo the next day. I was looking for, and found, a wealth of information and help and kindness here. Haven't kept up because we seem to be rushing along with chemo and blood work, a full-time-+ job, husband's health issues, and other furries in the house. But this is different because Monday our onco will also take chest x-rays that will tell us if these last months of great test results and minimal side effects have truly slowed the cancer. We adopted Roxie last June; her young owner died suddenly and the family couldn't keep her. My friend who's active in rescue was called about an elderly “white German Shepherd” who needed a home, so she called me knowing we were thinking about a buddy for the 2-year old male goofball GSD we'd adopted. We took him to meet Roxie, and as soon as I saw the curly tail and SMILE, I knew she was mostly Samoyed. But we loved her on sight and brought her home and she has been a complete joy as well as a bossy princess. An occasional limp started late last year. X-rays at emergency vet Christmas weekend showed nothing.  By the time we had more xrays done, the tumor could be felt and we met that day with the oncologist. She has been amazing through it all, and teaches me every day about living life with grace and gratefulness and at the top of your lungs: ROO ROOOOOOOOOOOOOO is her favorite quote.  We have some lovely duets.  I wanted to introduce her here now because whatever this vet visit brings will be a new chapter, with new emotions, on this road we never wanted to travel, and I wanted to stop and say thanks to all who help make it easier. So I'll kiss my furries goodnight and pass a prayer upstairs that we can keep our girl for awhile more.  And I'll look here for more wisdom and kindness and comfort.

The Princess asked me to let all her subjects, friends, and admirers know that, although not 100% clear, we got a good report today (big sigh).  Doc saw 2 small shadows in her lungs that were both there in March.  No change in size and unclear if anything other than old-girl mineral deposits, and blood work was perfect again, so we did the final dose of chemo.  Will go back in a month for more xrays, but she thinks Roxie still looks great.  She (Roxie, not the vet hahaha) was decked out in her pink Tripawds bandanna and her purple collar with her custom Tripawds "BE PAWSITIVE" tag and had a visit to the groomer's yesterday, so she was quite the vision.  Pranced all over the vet's office, soaking up admiration.  Her front-leg bandage from the IV matched her bandanna.  Popped her a Cerenia anti-nausea pill soon as we got to the car and, so far, no indication of nausea.  The carboplatin really hit her appetite the last couple of visits, but no lasting effect as her weight has barely moved.

We both feel that we're the lucky ones.  Although I'm always sad when I think of why we got her, it all seemed to work out as it should, and I feel like we were meant to see her through this.  She's such a character and brings us so much joy every day.  Through an inheritance, I've been fortunate enough to have funds to take care of Roxie and the other furries' needs.  Otherwise it would have been an agonizing decision about how much we could afford to spend.  We've been that route before, and it's really tough.  I'll probably have to push retirement out a few years, but expected that anyway!!  We'll never have "enough" time because they just don't live long enough, but at least her quality of life is good and she faces each day with a VERY LOUD ROO ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Thanks for the good thoughts.  Our onco vet isn't up on alternative meds, so I'll be back here looking for other things we can use to support our girl.

Sally, you've got her down pat and she thinks you could be a good servant, too.

Wellll, we don't want her ego getting too big to fit thru the door....and it's really close right now.  Hope that sigh of relief isn't what created the tornado in CT this afternoon; think it touched down in the same town the cancer center is in!!  She's still quite annoyed at that hotel...fell asleep and the bas%#rds stole her leg!!!  But they took the pain with it so it's ok...joke's on them!!

big-grinHow'd you know about the ice cream....actually lowfat frozen yogurt....every night...even when we're feeling not so hot...  ROO ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I just assume everyone's addicted to kce cream but especially Princesses! Yet another reason my Happy Hannah is a chunk tripawd.....no low fat bowl locking for her! She gets the remnants o Ben & Jerry's Colbert Americone....or Vanilla fudge caramel swirl! Darn, all my drool makes the keyboard slippery!!

You tell that Princess I would be honored to be her servant!

Love your depiction of her going to the "hotel" and they took her leg off!

mapping a sense of humor on tis "unique" journey sure does help!!

Best to ya'

Hey, how bout pictures!?

Your willing servant, Sally and Happy Hannah

No wonder Hannah is HAPPY!!!!  and I'm not reading this to HRH or she'll turn her pointy nose up at the yogurt.  We do soft serve, too, but thought I'd try to keep the sugar down.

It was such a whirwind with the diagnosis at our vet, consult with onco vet that afternoon and then we LEFT her there overnight so they could do the surgery the next morning.  Was supposed to stay 2 nights after surgery but she was howling the whole time and I think they just wanted some peace and quiet for her and the clinic, so the surgeon called the next morning and said she could go home.  At that point we had 14 inches of unplowed snow between us and the highway 2 miles away and more snow coming down.  I hadn't gotten the 1st floor re-done for her so told him they could keep her as planned and just turn up the radio in the recovery area.  He just laughed.  When we got her home and settled she kept looking at where the leg USED to be and just looked....annoyed.  Just can't get good help these days.

I'm a complete idiot with computer stuff, but I'd sent Rene some pics when we were working on Roxie's tags and a charm for my Spirit Triwpawd kitty, Trevor.  She's going to do some magic and get the pics out here.  In her spare time.

We do a mean duet, if I do say so.  And our GSD is starting to join in, but it's more like a whine.  My husband usually just turns up the tv.

Thanks for your wonderful pawsitive attitude!!!!!!  Hugs to you and Hannah.

Roxie is so white she glows. So glad you got positive news. Life is good for a dog named Roxie!

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

Many thanks to Rene for getting the pix up.  Next Roxie will expect a fan club, you just wait. She's got us both waiting on her hand and paw and thankful for the chance to do it.

The first pic was after we got home yesterday and she was in full voice after her road trip and social outing.  The blur behind her is Okey Dokey Smokey I'm-so-Damn-Excited Cletus Kemp, our 3-year-old GSD.  He was either chasing his tail or one of his stuffed toys.  From their first meeting, as he bounded out the back of our SUV and Roxie stopped him cold with one short bark, she's been the boss of him and he's been fine with it.  She often looks at him with her thought bubble saying "IDIOT", but they get on quite well and there's not been a single lifted lip between them.  He makes her look like The Good Dog without any effort on her part.  And I confess we admire her outside beauty along with her magical personality.  Her first dad, Scott, did a great job raising and loving her.

Sally, she inhaled her fro yo tonight, so the nausea seems to be a non-issue this time around, thanks to early start with the Cerenia, I think.  Sounds like others have had very good results with it too.

Next I'm going to tackle Trevor's tribute here; he was our original Tripawds.  I'm learning what all you more active members know; that sharing our furries' stories and good and bad news is very therapeutic, and he was a very special cat.

We actually had NO RAIN today at all - woo hoo and roo rooooooooooooo; wish we could send some of our excess moisture out west!!!

Best, Princess Roxie's assistant, Liz

The Princess Roxie Fan Club awaits further updates!

I'm hoppy to hear that she hasn't had any tummy or nausea issues. Talk about a big relief!

Yes, please do tell us about Trevor, it's always great hearing more about the pack members of our Tripawds community.

And we will most definitely take some of that rain. Just got bumped to a State 2 fire alert here in Colorado, which is pretty scary.
