My little girl Lola just lost her front right leg 3 days ago. She broke her leg about a year ago and the surgeon put a metal plate in her leg and six screws. Although we followed his directions and kept her off the leg 6 weeks later it broke again. She is a small 6 lb toy fox terrier. It broke at the screw sight at the same spot. Another surgery and another plate. We thought the leg was fine and 5 months later the leg broke again. This time at a different spot but at a screw sight. The bone was to compromised by all those screws. This time we took her to another vet where they took out the plate and tried a pin. The bone was so damaged at this point that the pin shifted and was causing more damage than good. The vet removed the pin. My poor dog. 4 weeks later the leg was not healing and the vet suggested removing the leg. Three breaks, 4 surgeries and $7,000.
I think I am more heartbroken about the leg than the dog is. She is only 19 months old. I realize that I have done all that I can to save the leg and she will be awesome as a tripawd. I am just so sad. I am glad that she will not have to endure the pain of any more surgeries on that leg but worry about her other front leg. She is a terrier and likes to jump. She is still a bit loopy from the pain medication but seems to be balancing her weight pretty well so far.
Lola and family, welcome. I'm sorry for all that you've been through but hang in there, things DO get better.
You are absolutely right; humans take this kind of thing far worse than dogs. In a few weeks you'll wonder why you were ever so upset. After you see how well Lola gets around, you'll be so amazed and inspired to never let adversity slow you down.
What kind of pain meds is she on? If she's not acting like herself, well remember that amputation surgery is a very big deal and the pain meds on top of that can make any dog a little loopy.
We suggest checking out our Tripawds ebooks to give you some insight on how to have a good life on three legs. Other members will definitely chime in here too. Rest easy, Lola's size will be a big advantage when it comes to getting around well, she shouldn't have any problems if you are conscientious (i.e., not letting her gain weight) and manage her activity.

Poor Lola has gone thru a lot in her short life. It sounds like you have been doing absolutely everything possible, but it just didn't work. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how well she will do as a tripawd. She is young and being out of pain will make a big difference. You will find so many answers and so much support on this site. Hang in there as the first couple of weeks are the hardest. Don't forget to take care of yourself too!
