Chance had another check up on Wednesday and his X-rays are still clear! Yay! He's 7 months post amp and 6 rounds of chemo. However, about a month ago (3 weeks after starting Cytoxan) Chance's face broke out with blisters and crusty sores all over. They were above his eyelid, on his face, legs, tail and scrotum. Since he already had some underlying skin issues, the doctors thought that maybe the chemo was causing that to flare up. The skin biopsy revealed that he is highly allergic to the Cytoxan. We stopped it immediately and his face cleared up. Unfortunately the damage was so bad that the hair on his face may not grow back. Yes, I have a bald faced dog! They really don't want to put him on any other chemo pills because the reaction was SO severe. I asked about K9 Immunity and the doctor didn't say NO, but said that is even a risk for an allergic reaction. So right now, there is nothing more that we can do except let Chance be Chance. And that is OK. I just wish that there was something more that I can do. He is on a high protein dog food. Blue Wilderness and takes fish oil. Has anyone else had this problem before and if so what did you try? I know there are plenty of holistic meds out there. I feel like something is worth a shot!
Chance is a 10ish Shetland Sheepdog Mix who was rescued from the shelter in January of 2013 and diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in September of 2013. He had a front left amputation and 6 rounds of carboplatin. He had a great 11 months and was diagnosed with lung mets on 8/23/14. He was released to the bridge on 8/28/14.
My dog used to get allergic reactions like that (and her fur did grow back, even though I didn't think it would). Keep Benedryl around the house, and don't feel like Chance is really missing out on a perfect treatment. When Quila was going through chemo, I did a lot of research, and was lucky to have CSU vet colllege near me. They do a LOT of research on bone cancer, and they were really open about their unpublished results. Turns out that there actually isn't a lot of evidence that continuous chemo works very well yet, maybe because there are so many protocols and it's tough to get enough data for any one of them, but possibly just because no one has found the right drug yet. I'm not saying anyone is doing anything wrong by doing metronomic, but don't feel like Chance is missing out on a proven miracle cure. Give him fish oil and lotsa loving!
Yeah, there are certainly no guarantees with anyof this "stuff", that's for sure.
My Happy Hannah got to celebrated fourteen months of happiness, loving and spoiling and we only did five rounds of carboplatin.
I know it feels like you want to keep "trying so ething"...or I know I did anyway. Only tried about two weeks of metro. (cytoxan) and stopped due to uti.
I did do K9 Immunity
and Apocaps
.
I would just call Aloha Medicinals Direct... link here.....and ask if there have been any allergic reactions. My "guess" is no! I did do a lot of home cooking with organic chicken, organic turkey' organic hamburger, etc. and som veggies and supplement with EVO and various other dry foods. Did the salmon fish oil, one Vitamin E, some eggsamd cottage cheese.....jist check around on the nutritional threads here...tons of infor.
Cheering for ya' Chance!! We love you!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Eggs!!! Eggs!!! TY says ask for them scrambled at 2am, really Mom will make them, she really will! Skip the kale though, I made a huge batch of food and included it , he wouldn't eat it. Broccoli and green beans were a go. Let him have the occasional no no though. I was a pretty strict "food police" and I regret that now. I have a dog that is allergic to a lot. He is a Border collie mix. He cannot eat chicken or any grains. I did however give him k9 Immunity when I had Ty on it. He had no problems with breaking out or itching on it. I did not try the Apocaps on him though. Hang in there ! Love from, Lori and Ty
TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
Ouch I'm sorry about that reaction! Did your doctor say anything about trying Leukeran as an alternative? Here's a blog post about leukeran. That's just a thought. If it's not an option, never feel like you aren't doing anything; just by paying attention to his quality of life and ensuring that he's having a good time instead of always feeling miserable, that's a HUGE thing to do for him. You're very conscientious, that's saying a lot.

Thanks for the comments. Jerry, they don't want to try any other chemo pills because they feel the same thing will happen again. Right now he is happy and otherwise healthy. We have ducks and chickens that lay eggs, so he gets PLENTY of those! We may try K9 immunity and I will cook a little more for him but other than that, we will just keep going and letting him do what he loves!

Ah, well I agree, quality of life, good home cooking and lots of play time is golden, I hope he's feeling much better now!
