Chance is our 10 year old German Shepherd/Labrador mix that we rescued as a puppy after he was
beaten with a pipe. We raced him to the vet and after some stitches and a bit
of tlc, we had found our new family pet. Even with all of his medical issues
over the past few years he has remained a sweet tempered, loyal friend. Chance
had started limping a bit in early August and after some xrays, the nightmare
began. We were sent to a specialist to investigate an "odd" area on
his shoulder. A biopsy was performed, and it was diagnosed as Osteosarcoma. The
surgeon recommended amputation so after many tears and uncertainty, we decided
to proceed. His right front leg was removed including his entire shoulder girdle.
He had a massive 17" incision that scared me to death. It has been a
harrowing time since then with many frantic calls to my very patient vet
because I was paranoid that something had gone wrong. We built a handicap ramp
for him to go outside and he was recovering very well from his surgery,
galloping through the house on his 3 legs playfully chasing our kitties.  All the medical staff have commented on what a sweet baby he is. Even while he was coming out from under anesthesia from the amputation, the nurses
would walk by and say his name, and they said his tail would just thump away as
he was lying on the bed! Just an absolutely amazing boy....

The past few months have been very trying, stressful and financially straining, though I did find some charity foundations that are helping us to pay for his 6 rounds chemotherapy, he is on #4. I am extremely grateful for the help from these grants, otherwise we wouldnt have been able to have him treated. These past few weeks have not been very good either. Chance was having trouble walking on his hind legs and it was discovered that he had slipped a disc in his spinal cord. We are using a sling to help him around n to go out to potty. We ordered one of the harnesses from Tripawds hoping it will help to manuever him around easier, anxiously waiting for it's arrival. The doctor said if the disc ruptures completely, it could paralyze his back legs. OMG! And he isn't wanting to eat much, trying to coax him with cooked chicken breast, ground beef and rice....anything I can get in him thats healthy basically.

We love our big boy so much that we will continue to fight this as long as we possibly can. So glad that Miss Rene suggested this forum so that I can connect with others who are battling the same kind of things with their babies. Helps tremendously to read the stories and advice from others.

It sounds like he's very lucky to have found you (and vice versa!).

We never had to deal with the spine issues on top of Abby's cancer. I hope the harness will help. Have you tried putting warm towels or something on his back? I wonder if that would help with the pain?

Hang in there, Chance!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Chance, I'm so glad you came here to tell us your story. Yes, you are dealing with a LOT, but hang in there, and lean on us, we'll be here when you just want to vent or whatever.

I'm wondering, what is the next step for treating the slipped disc? Has your vet given you a plan yet?

Hi Chance. So sorry I missed your post.  If you have access to pet physio they may be able to help you give some relief on the slipped disc.

Hang in there

Thank you so much for your responses and so sorry about the loss of your beloved pets. I know that we will have to someday say goodbye to our boy but for now we will continue the fight as long as he is able. The doctor has put Chance on a round of high dose steroids to reduce imflammation, tramadol for pain, and we have to keep him as immobile as possible. Hoping that it will bring him some relief, this is only day 4 of the prednisone, so just wait and keep him comfortable. He is such a brave darling. Always lovable and friendly, except when the kitties try to eat his food. He gets cranky, even though he doesn't want it, they still can't have it, lol smiley

He looks like such a sweetie.

I really hope the steroids work, we have our paws & fingers crossed for you.

If you have never tried acupuncture, it really works wonders on a lot of dogs. You might want to consider finding a vet who practices it, it could give a lot of relief.

I forgot about acupuncture.  Yes.... a good idea if you have a vet nearby who can do it.

Today has not been so great. Chance went down in the yard this morning and wouldnt get up. We had to carry him in the house then to the vets office for xrays. He has lost the use of both of his back legs now. Nothing conclusive from the doctor yet, waiting for him to talk to another doctor and should hear tomorrow hopefully if they can figure out what is happening. No sign of the cancer spread which is a good thing. Just want to cry :'( It seems like we have been fighting and battling so dang hard only to have him beat the cancer and have something else take him from us.

Sending ((((HUGS)))) and belly rubs your way!  It sounds like he's in good care with some very special parents looking over him.  Let's hope the meds help keep him comfy.  Feel better, Chance!  How about a doggie wheel chair ?  Ooooh, Chance, get better soon!  You're so precious!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

I love him dearly <3 He is just the bestest doggie I could ever ask for! So lucky to have had him in my life for the last almost 11 years. Hoping for a miracle so I can have him for maybe a couple more? We are trying to make sure he stays comfortable because I am sure he is probably scared since he cant move his hind end. We put a diaper on him and he was ok with that until he actually had to go and he panicked because he couldn't get outside. We got him cleaned up and finally calmed back down.  I thought about the wheel chair n might check into it. If they aren't too expensive, that might be an option to try next. Thank you for the hugs....he gets many hugs and kisses. He's getting much spoiled, lol, but that is perfectly ok in my book :)

Oh poor Chance, I know this is so scary for all of you. Please let us know what your vet's plan is. Remember, if you don't feel confident with it, ask for a referral to a specialist. Many dogs have bounced back from situations like this, try not to think the worst until you know exactly what you're dealing with. I'm glad it's not related to the cancer.

Stay calm, try not to panic and Chance hopefully won't either. We are all sending our love and hope for a better day tomorrow.

We lost our big boy today :'( He was doing so well and started a rapid descent about 10 days ago. He vomited up blood in the wee hours of this morning and it was discovered that his cancer had in fact spread and he was bleeding internally. His ravaged body just gave up the fight. We had to let him go because we loved him so much. It feels so empty in this house now....

Bobbi, this is just so sad, I'm very, very sorry and send all my condolences and hugs and love to you. It breaks our hearts when things happen so fast, there is never enough time to say goodbye.

Chance will always be by your side, his spirit will never leave. Listen carefully, he's not far.

Run free Chance, we love you.

Oh no.... I am heartbroken to hear this.  Please take comfort in knowing that you gave Chance such an amazing life.  It was a life full of love and security.  You took such great care of him, all the way until the end.  When you start to hurt, think about all the good times  you had with him, and that will bring a smile to your face.  You will be in my thoughts.

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.” ― Milan Kundera
