Hi all!!  New to the "Tripawd" life with our Great Pyrenees Hobbes.

His, and ours, story starts last December.  The Pyr Rescue my wife and I foster for sent out a plea for Pyr on "death row".  The local shelter had had Hobbes for the standard 7 day stray hold.  They had picked him up after he had been hit by a car and was on the side of the road.  Our rescue got the call that the shelter had a full blood Pyr no one was going to adopt because of his broken rear leg.

Our coordinator made some calls, found 3 of 4 Vets that would do the surgery, IF he had a foster home to go to.  So, they sent out the email.  Five minutes after I saw the email, I knew my wife would be calling (it took her about 2 minutes to call!!).  "I don't care what it takes, this guy does not die!!"  With my marching orders, I got a hold of the coordinator, told her we would take him.  Mind you, we had four of our own and two fosters already!

Hobbes was picked up that day from the shelter, transported to the hospital and operated on the next morning.  Originally, they felt he was a good candidate for saving the leg.  He spent the next two months with two pins in his leg, hobbling around as best as he could.  After the pins were removed, he still wouldn't use his leg.  Several xrays later, it was determined that the "bone callous" enveloped his knee and there was only one thing left to do.

After much wondering, wishing and talking with several other Veterinarians, it was decided, for Hobbes's benefit and health, to remove the leg.  So, on April 8th, I dropped him off and he had surgery later that morning.  We picked him up the next day, kept him "confined" for several days until the OR drugs wore off, and slowly let him get back into his "pack". {btw, the vet that did the surgery, both to put the pins in and to remove the leg, wanted to know why it healed the way it did.  What he found was bone shards that had migrated into his knee becoming a foreign body.)

By the end of January, we knew that the one thing we could not do, was let him go!  Our rescue knows (we gave them an application), that he would be a foster fail (not bad for him being the 7th foster thus far) and that we were prepared to take him, and his medical bills on right then.  One reason for this that for his first week with us, I slept on the kitchen floor with him.  I guess you could say we connected during that week. Well, I connected, he was still hopped up on drugs.  During his first few weeks with us, two of our fosters got adopted and we had to send our first Pyr, Max, over the Rainbow Bridge.  We have since gotten a new foster, hoped that he would start using his leg, and came to grips, finally, that the best thing for him was to remove his leg.

Mind you, neither me, or my wife, has ever had a k-9 with a broken leg, much less had to deal with an amputation!!  So, here starts our journey.  With one "tripaw" and four "monkey dogs", we will see what we need to learn, figure out and discover.

I'm sorry to hear one of your belpved pups nad to go to the Bridge. You have a wo derful Guardian Angel now to watch over you and Hobbes, just as you watched over your belpve Pyrenees while here in earth.

This is such a rough beginning for Hobbes. Yet, he is sooo lucky to have found you and his forever home.

Thank you for being such a wonderful caregiver to all these dogs who deserve to know what love feels like. Yij are wonderfully loving souls!

Hugs to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

PS...can't wait to see pictures of your pack!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Lovely to meet you Hobbes! I'd love to see photos. I bet you're a handsome boy. We have a rescue Pyr mix (Ellie) who became a tripawd last September because of OSA. She's done really well. I'm sure Hobbes will also adapt especially because he doesn't have the underlying cancer to also fight. How big is he? Any idea how old?

I'm sure you've read other tips but the big ones for us were to get slip free mats for around the house. I don't know if Hobbes is crated but the other thing we did was to build up the floor of the crate because she would trip getting in and out. (We used those 1" thick 4x4 mats with interlocking edges, cut to size.)

Ellie also needed a lot of help the first few weeks learning to lay down. If she plopped down on her own it really seemed to hurt. So we'd sort of put our arm under her bottom and bear her weight while she lowered herself. Maybe it is more of an issue w/ big dogs. Stairs were no problem for Ellie (she's a rear amp) and now she goes up them two at a time just like always! Going down is more of a butt-slide.

I read your post about phantom pain too. Ellie was unable to tolerate Tramadol and never had a pain episode like you describe. But we've had her on Gabapentin which she tolerates very well.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

Hey Denise!  We think he is around 4-5 years old.  That guesstimation is based on his teeth.

We also have some of the non-slip pads down in the kitchen.  When we first brought him home, we kept him in the kitchen/front entry (that is where all of the new fosters spend their first 10 days to 2 weeks with us.  It gives them time to settle in, gives our pack time to get used to them, and is still big enough for them to stretch out and relax.  It becomes "their" area, until time to come out with the rest of us.)  We have not crated him, just haven't had too, yet.  Hobbes isn't of the "disapyr" variety!!

Hobbes has since been intergrated into our Pack.  Like most of the males we have, he hasn't tried to take a certain position within the pack.  He, like Murphy (pyr) and Riley (Border Collie mix), just doesn't seem concerned with his position.  He is here, he "knows" he isn't going anywhere, so he just settled in.  That's not to say the others weren't interested in him, especially after the amputation (he smelled different!).

As soon as I download my pics from my phone, I will get some posted.

I so enjoyed reading your post about Hobbes and the rest of the pack. And I'd like to thank you for all the work you do on behalf of those fur-babies. It really takes a special heart and soul to do what you do. We're happy to have you here, just not under the circumstances you're dealing with.

I'd also like to convey my condolences regarding the loss of Max. It's never easy, but its the price we pay to have their love.

Can't wait to see pictures!!!

Wow what a lucky pup, all your pups are! You and your wife have good instincts and lots of love to give, thanks for caring for Hobbes and all your dogs. Such a fun sounding pack! We can't wait to see pics.

P.S. Giant breed dogs are especially inspawrational to this community, since so many old school vets still tell pawrents that they never make good Tripawds. Bogus, as you can see! So thanks again for joining us.

Quick update, Hobbes got the Gabapentine.  Called the next day (actually, the vet's office called, asking about him, and I brought up that drug, they got the Vet on the line and he had no problem giving a scrip for that!!).  Stretched the tramadol out to 12 hours, all is well.  Until today . . .

I hopped in the shower to get ready for work.  Going to let everyone out prior to leaving, and Hobbes is having problems getting around (his back leg wouldn't work).  Yeah, I am thinking "No way am I going to lose you now!!".  Called the vet, took the next available slot (the doc was headed into surgery) and got him in.  Hobbes had a phentonal (sp?) slow release patch for pain on his hip.  I have been trying to remove it for the last several days.  Apparently, Hobbes decided the patch had to come off, NOW, and proceeded to get a shot of that stuff on his mucous membranes.

He staggered around like a drunken sailor (being a Jarhead, I have seen a few of those), and was drooling like crazy!!  Got him to the Vet's office (the Vet was worried he injured his good leg), they took him back and checked him out, pronounced him good, and we were on our way.  He recovered, looked at me with a very hung over look, and has been "pyr pissy" ever since this afternoon.  All is well.

He is still drooling up a storm, but he is alive, stumbling around, and giving the look like "why did you let me do that!!".

Again, thanks for all the support and kind words.  This site rocks and I have gotten a bunch of useful info already.  Still trying to figure out how to post pics, as soon as I do, you guys will be telling me to stop.

Here are instructions for adding photos to forum posts . Since you've uploaded the photos to your Media Library, you can copy the image file location (URL) and paste in your forum post using the Insert Media button.

Or, consider adding a link to Hobbes' blog in your forum signature using the Profile button at top.

Hope this helps! way-cool

Yikes! Sounds like you are having a thrill a minute! Glad Hobbes is OK after the fentanyl incident. Sounds like everything is under control. I had to jump on here and thank you and your wife as well for being such rescue angels. A good foster home is golden. My husband and I were also foster failures and now have three tripawd GSDs and a mutt. Unfortunately we have no more room at the inn right now and it kills me when I see a pup in need.

Oh Hobbesy---you're awfully cute! You remind me of our Lily (long ago sent over the Bridge). She was our first full Pyr. LilyImage Enlarger
