My name is Kim and my dog is Charlie Brown. We just came about this site and it looks like a great support system and information site which we very much need. Charlie my four year old mutt has vasculitis. He has been fighting it for three years now and seems to only be getting worse. It started with his hide left leg which has been so swollen he hasn't used it in a year. They were going to amputate this week but with his immune system being so low due to all his pills they don't believe he'd be able to recover. So we have now resorted to fitting him for a brace. The past couple months he's starting to get scabs on his eyes, nose and badly on his stomach.. I just don't know what to do. Does anyone here have any advise for this desperate mommy??
thanks Kim and Charlie
Welcome and thanks for joining Kim. Your future posts will not require moderation. Best wishes for Charlie Brown, he's in good hands at CSU.

Welcome Charlie Brown….what a great name. Unfortunately I don't know anything about vasculitis but I'm sure someone will chime in here who has had some experience with what sounds like an awful disease. So from what I read it is an autoimmune type of disease? Poor guy. It sounds complicated and painful. Sounds like you are at one of the best care facilities in nation for him. I hope the brace will help him use his leg more and they can figure out the best way to fight this awful thing. I will be praying for him and your family through this rough time as I know how hard it is to watch your dog be in pain. My thoughts will be with you and hopefully the vets will come together for some good plans for Charlies recovery.

Oh no.
I'm so sorry you find yourself here with us. I'm jsut so very sorry about Charlie Brown.
Yes, we have had a couple of dogs deal with Vasculitis. Here is Oscar's story. I'm still trying to search for the other one I remember. I will post it as soon as I find it. Please keep in mind when you are reading the posts that user "tazziedog" is a vet. She responded to Oscars story.
I'm sorry the outcome was not good with others. I hope this isn't the case with Charlie Brown. I do remember "tazziedog" saying utterly painful it is.
I'm terrible sorry. You have good vets at CSU, so please let them guide you to do what is the best.
Best wishes to your Charlie Brown.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. So I talked to Charlies vet and he basically said he has high risk of passing but for today I have him and I'm going to spend every min with him wisely. I just love reading all your stories and how brave all you have been. Pets these days are our children and people really need support and help thru tough times with their pets. You guys are really doing a good thing here- I know seeing your messages to Charlie has made my day.
I will keep you posted with my babies updates. and please share your stories with me.
I'm sorry to hear the news. I wished I had magic words to help ease your heartache. But please know, we weren't any braver than you. We were terrified most of the time. And that's why we help each other. No one should have to go through this by themselves. So, please don't think you are alone.
I can only give you one small bit of advice...take lots of pictures and videos. There just never seems to be enough. Even the most mundane videos and pictures will be so meaniful later. You'll want to remember every imaginable thing Charlie Brown does. You may not be able to look at them for awhile but you will one day.
I know you'll be loving him up so please give him a little kiss from us. He's an honorary Tripawd Warrior Prince now. He will feel the power of our community.
Please keep us posted and come by anytime to talk if you need to.

wish the news was better, but we agree with cometdog - pictures and video. and just capture each and every moment you have. where true love exists, time stands still.
charon & spirit gayle
Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included). She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.
Love Never Ends
I agree - lots of pictures, and don't forget to make sure you are in them too! Since I'm always the one wielding the camera, I had hardly any pics of me WITH Abby. The week before we died, we had some pics taken with the 3 of us in (our whole little family unit) and they are a treasure now.
We're here for you and sending strength out to you!

Your guy's messages to my baby seriously make me tear up. Its so comforting knowing my Charlie has a support system backing him up. I'm going to try and get a poster size photo of Charlies face and hang it in my living room.. but he's camera shy so its going to be some work. ha ha. I already have a ton of photos of him but I'm already listening to what you guys have said and all night and day now and opportunity I get I'm like " Ooh picture" My dogs are my baby's as I know you all know and I've never felt such a deep stomach uneasiness. It's been a rough few days... But so worth having spent these four years with him (and hopefully much more knock on wood) I'm not giving up on you yet my Charlie bear!
We're not giving up on him either! I hope that he will stay strong for a long time, I'm so sorry you're both dealing with this awful disease. Whatever you do, don't let it "win" by stealing precious time away from you. Make the most of every minute instead of spending that time mourning. There will be time for tears some day far away I hope.
Hope to see lots of photos from you. I know you'll treasure them forever.
