Most of us here lean pretty heavily towards the "don't leave them alone" side of the equation. The main reasons are pain management and unforeseen events.
Since you asked for advice, this is my own personal take. I would ask the vet if they plan to do any overnight check-ins. Will someone go check on Athena during the night? They may say they don't do overnight care but in fact they have someone go and look in and deal with issues. Sally makes a good point about seeing if the vet will let you pay a tech to either stay or stop in. It isn't essential that someone sit staring at Athena all night, but it is important that she be looked in on.
If the clinic opens at 7:30, find out what time the first person shows up. It's earlier than that, I imagine. And what time is the last person out the door at night? Then see if they will let you pay for an overnight nurse.
If that didn't work, I would find out how much the emergency vet would cost. Without knowing for sure, it's too easy to discard the option. They may have some kind of deal with your vet that you don't know about. Don't say no to it till you know how much. If you do the transport between, you will have vets on each side loading and unloading. They have gurneys they can use. It won't be difficult or traumatic and she'll be zonked anyway.
If it was prohibitively expensive, I would bring my dog home. Every dog is so different in terms of recovery. It's impossible to know if Athena will be a breeze the first few days or not. Dharma's Kermit had some difficult days and nights even after 2 days in the hospital. My dog stayed one night and didn't have any trouble till he'd been home for about 4 days...and even then nights were nothing. I would have had zero problem caring for Dakota overnight because he slept and he slept like a log. I am not squeamish, I am capable of looking at blood and stitches and whatever, and I can get up to my elbows in whatever I need to.
It may be that telling your vet that you need to bring Athena home will inspire him to get someone to stay overnight. However, many vets release these dogs same day. We have a ton of folks here who brought their groggy dogs home same day and did just fine. I think the first night would be the easier night anyway since her anesthesia will still be in her body. And your vet will tell you that's why you should leave her there and not worry! But I still would bring mine home. We are the crazy dog people around here. I can't deny that. And you will make the best decision, based on your talk with your vet. You really will. Listen to people here, talk to your vet, then decide based on what you think is best. (If you decide to bring her home same day, make sure you have at least one other person at home to help when you get back with her.)

Hey guys, thanks for the input! I have decided to bring her home that day, waiting until the very latest that they will let me pick her up. (Hopefully right before they close at 8pm.) It's going to be a long next few days!!

I will always love you, Athena.
I would do the same. It's not the easiest route but at least you'll be more comfortable having her with you.
Be sure to get all of the emergency contact info from your vet, 24-hour clinic # and even your vet's cell #. Ask for what to watch out for in terms of incision leakage, when panting and whining is NOT normal and also get a good description of the side effects you might see from the post-op pain meds she will be given. Write down all of your questions so you have them ready when you talk.
We'll be here to help as best we can, hang in there!

I just got some potentially devastating news and my heart just sank. The vet called and said that the set of x-rays they just took while Athena was sedated showed a lot more clearly two suspicious spots in her lungs. He recommended not to proceed with the amputation today, and he is sending the images to a radiologist today to get a second opinion. I will be bringing her home soon and hopefully hear about the results of the radiologist's opinion later today or tomorrow. Basically, if there are mets he says no amputation...

I'm sorry, Jessica. I know how that must have made your stomach drop. You have chosen a good vet, though, one who wants to make the best decisions armed with as much knowledge as possible. Having another pair of eyes on the films will at least help you feel that all that's possible is being done. It doesn't make this any easier, though. I'm sorry.
We will cross all finger, toes and paws that the radiologist says this is not bad news and you can proceed. Hang in there.

Thank you for the support! Athena is home now, recovering from the sedation- and amputation has been rescheduled for tomorrow. He sent out her images to a radiologist and the results were actually good. No mets in her chest.

That is great news for you & Athena. I am so sorry that you had to go through that though. Keep us informed on how the surgery goes. If you have any questions let me know I brought Sassy home the same night as her surgery. I didn't get much sleep because I am a worrier (I was up every few hours checking on her) She slept the night away though because she was pretty doped up.
Sassy is a proud member of the Winter Warriors. Live long, & strong Winter Warriors.

Athena and family,
Welcome to Tripawds. I finally had a chance to read through this posting and your blog. It has already been a rollercoaster ride so far but hopefully things will settle down for a bit soon. Funny enough, one of my recent blog entries is entitled "the ride"'as I describe the experience one goes through with their Tripawd as they also wage the battle against cancer. You are strong and are Athena's number one advocate. Always trust your gut, never be afraid or hesitant to doubt or question or ask for second and third opinions, and know that we are all here for the both of you. We can't wait to hear more and wish you the best. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Best wishes

Wow, I'm just catching up with this story. Roller coaster describes it perfectly. You think you have a plan and then wham, there's a road block. I'm glad your vet was thorough and you got the go ahead.
I'm probably jumping in here too late, but I'm one member who left their girl alone overnight at the vet's. If we wanted to move Libby to the ER vet overnight we would have had to do it ourselves. I didn't want to put her through a move or seeing us and not understanding what was going on. We were so nervous and apprehensive about leaving her. The surgeon called us after hours to try and calm our fears. Libby did very well after surgery and she just wanted to make sure she was well hydrated and her pain was under control before we brought her home. She tried to make us feel better by letting us know she'd be working late (til 8pm or 9pm), that Libby was sedated enough and someone would be back in my 7:30am. We only felt a tiny bit better but all turned out well.
I wish you and Athena a very speedy recovery!
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
I am happy to report that Athena's amputation went very well according to my vet! She had her head up a few hours later looking around. Vitals are normal.
(Amya- I decided that I was comfortable enough to leave Athena at the vet office tonight.) Especially after dealing with her yesterday just waking up from sedation, I couldn't imagine managing her in that state with her incision site to worry about, also. I thought it would be best to keep her immobile the first day as much as possible. She should be sleeping all night until the first people arrive at 6:30 am, anyway. The vet will call me in the morning for an update, and then later in the afternoon to let me know if she made any progress when they try to walk her. She might be coming home tomorrow.
