My dog's name is Sonja. She's a German Shepard/Husky.
Last January, when Sonja was 4 months old, I was living with my, now ex, boyfriend. One day while I was out, my boyfriend called saying Sonja had tripped him and he had fell on her and that she was freaking out and I needed to come home. We took her to the vet and they did x-rays and said her back right leg was broken above the knee joint. They put a cast on it and told us to come back in a few weeks. A few days before it was time to go back to the vet, Sonja came out of her cast. To my disbelieve, they had not put padding in her cast and her leg had been completely rubbed raw. This was in the middle of the night so I decided to take her in the following morning. When I woke up, I could tell something was seriously wrong so we rushed back to the vet. The vet staff seemed extremely concerned and they told me to leave her there and they would call me later. They called a few hours later saying that Sonja had a severe bone infection and her leg was now broken below and above the knee cap (probably from coming out of the cast). They said they had to keep her until the infection was gone and that they would have to amputate because her breaks would never heal because of their location.
As of today, Sonja does great. She runs and plays normally with my other dog. She goes up and down stairs, gets on the bed by herself, gets in and out of cars just fine. Besides some extra ear scratching and some assistance when she gives me her "look" she's just like any other dog. But not like any other dog I've had before. I have a bond her that I've never had with any other animal and I could not imagine my life without her.

Alex and Sonja, welcome!
Sonja you are such a VERY pretty girl. I'm so sorry you had to lose your leg like that, I can only imagine how scary and awful that must have been. What a terrible thing! But I'm so glad you're all better and have your sparkle back. I'll bet you're a bundle of energy being that your still such a little kid. What fun!
Thanks for joining us and sharing your story. We'll be sure to include it in the 1st annual Tripawd Awareness Day posts on 3/3! Don't be a stranger, we'd love to hear more about your adventures.

She's beautiful! I'm so glad to hear she got immediate care and is doing so darn well these days. Keep up, girl!
ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
Sonja is so adorable! Thank you for sharing her story.
Karen and Spirit Magnum
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
She's gorgeous! Yes, it's so true that we form amazing bonds with our tripawds.
I sure miss mine.
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
