Hi, I am new to this forum. This link was sent to me by a wonderful person on another dog forum that I am on.
I am going to be a new tripod owner tomorrow. My beautiful 4 1/2 month old red ACD, Allira unfortunately had a freak accident today & although her leg could be saved, it would mean months of pain plus no guarantees of success (along with the possibility of lifelong arthritis) so I decided the best decision was to amputate. It is her front right leg & today, she broke her elbow clean through with major nerve damage. Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
I think I made the right decision for her & I am looking forward to finding out the best ways to take care of my new tripod beauty. She was meant to be a show girl but I have now decided that her new task in life willl be as a therapy dog. Her sweet personality will make alot of people happy I am sure of it.
What a wonderful site that you all have,
CDM

Thank you for the kind comments and thanks for registering as a forum member!
You did make the right decision. And believe it or not, you can consider yourself fortunate. The majority of us here are tripawds because of cancer. I'm sure Allira is otherwise healthy, so you should expect a quick, full recovery with years of happy, pain-free life on three legs.
The best thing you can do for your new three-legged friend is to be strong and patient. Ween her off the pain meds as soon as possible and don't panic if she takes a spill or two. Consider putting down carpet runners if you have hardwood or other slippery floors. Make sure she has a firm bed and keep her from jumping on the couch or your bed until she has totally regained her strength – and even then, be very careful not to let her jump down from any height onto her one remaining front leg. A harness can help when it comes to this, and stairs and cars.
You can also search these forums with keywords for any specific
concerns you have and find plenty of tips on how to prepare for
recovery and what to expect.

Thank you Jerry 🙂
I really appreciate the advice as it is going to be all new to me. I will definitely look into the harness & we are also looking into a rubbery type flooring as carpets & runners don't last long in this farmhouse lol.
I know how headstrong she is, so I will work with her on not jumping onto or off of the couch. Her new nickname is now going to be Gulibaa (Gu la bay) which is Australian Aborigine for 3.
I am very sorry that most of you are now tri-pawds because of cancer but it is good to see how healthy & beautiful all of you are. Tri's are truly special & I will not be looking into artificial limbs for her. Knowing her as an ACD, she will probably just eat the fake limb anyway lol.
Thank you again & I am already learning so many things from this site. I look forward to learning more.
My girl
I'm sorry I was going to enter a picture but I'm not sure how. She is doing great. She already wants to bounce around the house & the remaining leg has moved to the middle & her toes spread to keep her balance. She's still the fiesty cheeky monkey that she was before the accident.
I'm very proud of my little girl 🙂
