I gathered the excess T-shirt material around Otis' waist with a hair tie. Fortunately, he really wasn't that interested in his staples. Not sure that a T-shirt will do much against a really determined dog.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
STELLLLLLAAAAAAAAA! Congrats on your arrival home! That is fantastic news! Soooooooooooo happy to hear it!
(Have no advice on cone of shame because Heffalump and CharlieBear both had to wear it unless I was right there. They hated it and it was so sweaty for them that I ended up velcroing washcloths on the inside and switching those out as needed. I think CharlieBear had to wear his for almost two weeks. ) If she continues to be a pestilence and wants to skip the rest step ( rest, recovery, rehab) Ace may be a necessary " evil" for a bit.
Stella, you are HOME!!! Smooches all around Stella!!!
I'm so pleased she's home and it sounds as though she, and you, are doing amazingly well. Ditto Sally on the doughnut cone. Meg had the inflatable kind and they were infinitely better. She actually quite liked them, as she could rest her chin on it like a cushion and go to sleep. Not certain if this would be adequate for Stella. Meg is short legged so it blocked her very effectively. Worth a punt though, I would say. Here's a pic of Meg in it (before she lost her leg, obviously...)
Ruby, Staffy, born June 2022, became a Tripawd, November 2023, adopted January 2024.
Also Angel Tripawd Meg (aka The Megastar), who died in April 2023, aged 14, after seven glorious years on three, and Angel Staffies Elsie Pie and Bille. In the pawprints of giants...
I will order one of grouse closes asap. I just had to blow dry poor Stella's neck and cheeks. She was soaking wet and the wet dog stench was horrible. She has A LOT of fine, long hair around her scruff and she keeps licking the inside of the cone.. constant wet .. are there any giant bibs?? Oh I never fathomed THOSE were the post op problems.. I suppose it could be worse.
I ended up having to sleep in the living room because my other dog, Mithras was freaked out because, I have no idea.
He ended up waking me at 1:30 becasue Stella was standing on her crate and needed a potty break. Good Mithras. Around 3ish she did whine a little but not much. Received her meds at 6:45 am and received a good blow drying.
how do I post pics in here from my phone? Any ideas?
This is the same collar Meg had. Order through the Tripawds Amazon link, though, because it benefits the community,
I'll post a link to posting photos below. No problem doing it from your phone, but they need to be hosted somewhere online , either through a Tripawds blog or Photobucket, or something like that, then you post the link.
If that's too much faff for now (I realise you've got your hands full...) then just PM me and I will send you my email. If you email me the pics, I'd be happy to post them for you. Pure self interest, you understand, I want to see more Stella.

Now Stella, I think you just added another potential "challenge" during the recovery process we can prepare members! EXCESSIVE CONE LICKING SATURATING THE FURRY SCRUFF REQUIRING BLOW DRYING THE SCRUFF:-)
Yep Stella, you invented a new one for us kiddo!! I think checking into bibs maybe a good idea! Hopefully the blowup donut will work better rhough!
I'm glad you are able to get the pain dosing done at more reasonable hours now. And Mithras sounds like a good little nurse helping you watch over Stella!
Hugs!
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
PS...Adorable photo of Meg 🙂 🙂 🙂
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

What a beautiful pair, and how great that your male ended up alerting you that Stella needed to go out!

THANKS MEG!!
Stella and Mithras are GOEGEOUS PUPS!! ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!
To hear Stell was chewing her bone within twenty minutes of being home, and hearing how she goes into her crate on her own, just warms my heart!!! 🙂
Hope the donut works better!!
Loooove these pics!!

Yaaay! I'm just now catching up and am so glad to hear things are going nicely.
Clare, THANK YOU for posting the Stella photos, that was so nice of you! I'm also hoppy to help with adding images so don't hesitate to PM me. We can never get enough of Stella!
Have you seen our Wyatt's cone of shame ? This is a great one:
The Best Soft e-Collar Cone for Dogs and Cats Recovering from Surgery
Regarding the ace...you're lucky if it works with Stella. It makes a lot of GSDs crazy, like our Wyatt. Not being able to move yet knowing what's going on around him makes him wilder than without. We use Xanax (vet prescribed) and Gabapentin on him when he's had surgery recoveries.
Gabapentin alone may be enough to make Stella sleepy. The dosage sounds normal to me but ask your vet if you're concerned.
I hope today is a great day! I'm in the Tripawds Chat room until about 12 pacific time if you want to talk. Keep us posted.

Thank you all. I've ordered a soft cone instead of the doughnut.. and an adult bib.. she still has 2 small wet spots below her cheek and under chin but she is done with the blow dryer (rolling my eyes here).
jerry, I have noticed she's been rather calm/sleepy. I actually checked to see if I accidentally gave her ace this morning. I haven't. So the gabapentine seems to keep us all sane for now.
I wish there were a way to cut the gabapentine.. I have a 50x 300mg but will have to get more 100mg Friday cause that's what she is on now.. I can quarter her carpofen easily enough..
and I sincerely hope they will let me sleep in bed tonight.my Lower back is KILLING me and all my massage friends are in AZ (I'm a massage therapist myself but self massage isn't cutting it w lower back pains)..
ok. I think I've whined enough for today. I need to remember in the big scheme or things all is really good for now
The things we do for our dogs. When Tess had cruciate repair, I slept on a mattress on the first floor from July to October. Otis broke his leg beginning of February, and we were back on the mattress for another 3 months or so (but I did move the box spring down after a month, which really helped).

Me again. After blow drying Stella's neck and chin a bit more, I've investigated the damp area closer. I'm not sure if she is developing a hot spot or if I'm overreacting. She seems to have a small bald spot on her neck but it could just look like it because some of her hair still bunches together because it's still has a tiny bit of moisture.... she had the same happening on her other side and after it finally was all totally dry there is no bald spot any longer. Her skin does appear dark pink/reddish 🙁
sorry for all these long posts with question about a damp neck 🙁
