Hi Everyone,

First I want to say I am so happy to have found this site. Love to read all of the stories, and gather info for our new tripawd, Sam.

Sampson is our 5 year old, 95 lb Yellow Labrador. We have had him since he was a puppy, and he is so active and full of life. About 6 months ago we found a mass in Sam's right front leg, near his "ankle" after a few tests, decided it was best to remove it. The mass was biopsied and found to be a Nerve Sheath Tumor. We were told that Chemo and Radiation were the only options. And without any treatment the mass would likely grow back in about 1 year. 4 months later it was back in numbers. In the spot where 1 was, we could see a pronounced 5 or 6 lumps. The mass(es) seemed to grow in size overnight. We went for a 2nd opinion, and were now told that likely the only course of action was amputation.

We are now 4 days post surgery, and Sam is doing, well, so so I would say. He had a rough post op, and was at the vet for 3 days. He has quite a bit of swelling and bruising. He is drinking well, and eating so so. He really doesn't want much to do with his dog food, so we baked up some fish for him, and mix that with his dog food and he will eat about 3/4 of a cup. He will only get up off his bed to go outside to potty (we help him along by using a towel for a sling), but he really isn't doing any getting up and moving around on his own.

He is on Tramadol and  Deramaxx for pain, as well as an antibiotic. Since he wasn't eating, the vet decided to cut the Tramadol to half doses, (thinking it was upsetting his stomach) and that seems to be helping.

I know the meds keep him a bit more lethargic than normal, as this is how he was 4 months ago after his first surgery. I am just hoping over the next few days his energy perks up again. Hard to see him looking so "sad" if you will.

He goes back to the dr. tomorrow for his first post op visit, so we will see what the Dr. has to say about his recovery.

Welcome and best wishes for Sam's speedy recovery. Your future forum posts will not require moderation.

Most people see vast improvements once their pups are off the pain meds. Until then, there is no need for Sam to be up and about other than to eat, drink and do his doody. Check the photo galleries and you will see how bruising and swelling are common, as are seromas. For more info, watch Dr. Pam's video about common post-op complications or consider downloading Tripawds e-books for fast answers to the most common questions and concerns.

Pain meds may cause lethargy and constipation, but the NSAID can cause intestinal distress. Please keep in mind that we are not vets though. Please let us know how it goes with yours!

Hang in there.  We were lucky because our girl was fairly mobile from day one and would hop between beds, but I know from reading stories on here that it really differs from dog to dog.  It's a really big op, so it makes sense that it takes time for them to be up and about.   If he's drinking and eating that's great - and I'm sure I'd want special food after being in hospital too!

Just take each day as it comes, and let your vet know if you are worried about anything - hope the check up goes well.

So sorry you and Sampson had to go through this..... Makes me sad that he is still young. My sweet yellow Lab Polly, had her first bout with cancer at age 6 (mast cell), and we are now fighting hemangiosarcoma, in which she lost her right front leg to. I truly hope your handsome boy is back to himself in no time, and we will be keeping you in our thoughts.

I am sorry Sampson had this diagnosis.  The best thing for Sampson right after surgery is rest.  Don't over do it as that can slow down the recovery period.  Sampson is very handsome.  He will be back to himself in no time and usually the first few weeks they are a little mopey.  Keep your head up :)

Welcome Sampson. Sorry you have to fight this crappy disease, but hang in there. In a couple weeks everything will seem much better and you'll be on your way back to your old self. Give your family lots of kisses as this is difficult for them to see you not feeling good.

Take care and keep us updated-

Sampson is one good looking boy! And clearly a very loved boy!

Sampson is so very early in recoery and I kow this is very jard to watch. HOWEVER, when his sparkle comes back...and it will...you will be so glad you did this amputatin for Sampson!

It was three weeks before I started seeing Happy Hannah's sparkle come back and stay. Most dogs recover faster, sme even slower? Try not t be discouraged, Sampson will be back to his full of life sweet self soon!

Hang in there and eat lots of chocolate...it helps!

Hugs!

Good morning,

Tucker, my nine year old chocolate lab, had his right front leg amputated four months ago.  Tuck is doing amazingly well and has adapted well to being a tripawd.

As I'm sure you have read on this site, the first two weeks of the recovery period after the surgery can be tough....on everyone....Sampson is adapting to a new physical reality, coping with meds and healing from a major surgery.

Tucker really rallied after his two week check-up when he had his stitches and cone of shame removed by the vet.

For now, celebrate all of the small accomplishments with Sampson and watch for the light to return in his eyes :)

Hugs,

Linda and Tucker

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. It really helps to hear all the similar stories.

Sammy had a check up yesterday, and they decided to remove his bandages... he has some abnormal bruising well beyond the surgical area so they were thinking that it might be too constricting. He seems like a new dog. Happier, more alert and responsive... actually tried to get up on "his" couch.... for a nap!

OH pawesome that he's feeling better. We've seen bandages do that occasionally, I'm glad it's off as obviously Sammy is too! Here's to relaxing on the couch!
