I volunteer at a local no kill dog shelter, about 2 months ago we had a 5 year old, female black lab mix surrendered to the shelter. Her name, Ariel, when she came into the shelter we had to rush her to the emergency vet for a UTI. On the forms filled out by the owner she had chronic UTI's, however the medical records showed no visits for them. When the owners turned her in we asked how she lost her leg and they told us she was hit by a car when she was young. However medical records given to us only indicate that 3 months prior to the amputation that a bandage was applied and the next input said amputation of rear leg. After she had the amputation she was taken home and given little care/support from the surgery, she was kept outside. The good leg seems to either have been injured, whether it was from the so called hit by car or if it occurred over time as her weight kept increasing. The mobility of the good rear leg is very minimal, her hips sag and her spine curves. She can only walk about 30-40ft before she either sits down or starts to drag.
Despite her previous care and physical limitations the lab personality shines through, she is definitely driven by her stomach and wants nothing more than a belly rub and a tennis ball. Ariel stole my heart, I have recently bought a house and what better way to start than with a Tripawd! I am now planning furniture and entrances to and from the house around her. Last week I ordered a wheelchair from Walkin' Wheels and I'm hoping that this will give her the support that she lacks as well as the ability to go places with me. I am new to the Tripawd life and especially that now on top of her UTI's there is a possibility that she is incontinent. I am very grateful for this site that I can browse and share the experiences others have had, I am still open from advise and suggestions.
Thank you,
Rachel & Ariel

Stop it!! My heart's melting all over the place!! What a story! Yeah, rocky start to say the least....but now....let the loving and spoiling begin!!
Her situation may prevent her doing long walks, but the joy of being loved and spoiled and tons of tummy rubs and rolling around in the grass and getting treats......heck....who needs stupid walks anyway,!
Really look forward to more updates! You are so derful!

Thank you All! I put Ariel in her new Pink wheelchair yesterday. At first I was just going to size the harness to her, I set the cart up next to her and she didn't pay it any mind, so I put her in the harness. She didn't care all she was concerned with was the hot dog that I had in my hand(a true lab) next I strapped the harness into the struts of the cart and she didn't panic one bit. Next was the true test the rear leg ring and the sling, I lifted her back end up and set her in the harness, next thing I knew she was off and trotting. It was such a good sight to see her actually walking more than 30ft, it was like she had been in it before. She loves it, Watch out here she comes!
p.s. how do i upload a video and pictures but i can't get them to load.. help. Thanks
YAY Ariel!! That's wonderful! I thought for certain she was going to balk at the wheelies when you first posted about it. I know you are just bursting with pride and hope for an even brighter future if that's possible!
You are her Angel and she is yours!

Hi and welcome.
Arial is beautiful. I hope she is still liking her new wheels.
My pug Maggie became incontinent, we had great luck with a drug called Proin (I think that is the name). I was washing her back end every day and doing at least a load of laundry a day. Of course in the middle of that my dryer broke down... but I digress. Mag had recently been diagnosed with kidney failure so I was trying to avoid another med, but things were intolerable for her and me. The day she took her first dose of proin the incontinence stopped! I think Dr. Pam (on this site) had some concerns about using it long term, but I don't remember for sure. Maggie was battling a second cancer by then so I wasn't worried about long term effects.
Good luck!
Karen
