Hi all.  As I type this, Luna, our white german shepherd is resting comfortably at the vet's - after her amputation surgery today.

Everything happened so fast for us - we noticed her limping and favouring her left hind leg earlier this week - and when she wouldn't put any weight on it (and her hock looked slightly swollen), I immediately took her to the vet.  That was yesterday.  He did x-rays and discovered that she had cancer.  He suggested we amputate the leg to increase her chances of survival - so at 3pm today, she went into surgery.  Original x-rays showed that it has not metastasized to her lungs yet - although it could be too small for the x-ray to detect.  We're hoping we caught it in time and that the amputation will allow us to enjoy many more years with her.

We pick her up from the vet's tomorrow afternoon.  My husband has already built a ramp down the front steps (only 2 steps!) so that it will make it easier to get to the front lawn to potty.

It's been a rough coupla days - but she is strong and we will be strong with her.

Welcome beautiful Luna! I'm so glad that that she has come through surgery and will be home soon. We also caught Lily's  osteo and had a very rapid progression to surgery-it leaves your head spinning. You are certainly in the right spot. I don't know what I would have done without Tripawds!! You will find the most wonderful support here from people who truly understand. Please keep us posted on how Luna is doing.

Joan and Lily

Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!!

We're home!!

Luna was actually standing up in her kennel when the vet's assistant came in to check on her this morning.  She didn't even have a cone on and all her sutures and IV were all in place.  She even walked outside for a morning pee.  Great start!  She's resting right now...so hopefully we'll have a peaceful night

YAY Luna!! Surgery is over and you are home:-) :-)

Your poor parents really have had quite a rough few days. Of course, your pretty high on pain meds right now and don't know why everyone is so worried:-) :-)

You've probably reviewed this site enough to know that the first week or so can be a challenge in so many ways, but the sparkle will come back, the pain is already gone and Luna will adjust very quickly to life on three legs:-) :-)

Do you have rugs around to help with traction ? You sure didn't have much time to prepare!!

Let us know when Luna poops and pees......we are so goofy about celebration g this gs like that:-) :-) :-)

Luna may.....or may not....have a few. nights of pacing and whining...partially related to drugs and partially due to pain/discomfort. Thus, you may not sleep very well either:-)

You will be amazed though how well she will do and how glorious her days will be!! No one knows how long anyone has but you have an opportunity to experience a depth of love you never k ew possible:-) :-) Luna will be so loved and so spoiled she will be I toxicated with the bliss of it all!

We are here for you! You do not. have to go this journey alone! Please let us know if you have ANY concerns orjust need a dose of strength!! We have syringes dull of large doses:-) :-)

So look forward to our updates when you can! You are very committed parents and doing exactly what you needed to for Luna! Did your vet suggest any follow-up treatment?

Surrou ding yo with healing energy,

Sally and Happy Hannah

Home is the best place to be!

Yea for standing and peeing already too superstar.

Hopefully you have read here that the first couple of weeks after surgery can be full of ups and downs- so don't get discouraged if Luna seems to go back a couple hops after she has been home.

We are here to provide support and answer any questions we can.

Welcome Luna!

Sounds like you are already works towards a great recovery. Just don't go too fast as that just slows things down in the end. Look forward to seeing and hearing lots about you.
