Last May our 8 year old golden retriever was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his right front leg. We had the limb amputated and chose not to pursue chemotherapy. We wanted him to be out of pain and have the best life possible for whatever time he had left.
The first week or two after the surgery had its ups and downs. Initially he was just like his old self, though a little unsteady on three legs. But the days where he was less active and didn't seem himself and just laid around were very hard to watch. We questioned whether we had made the right decision and whether we made his life worse. I had to keep telling myself that he just lost a leg and to be patient with his recovery.
And he did make a full recovery. He was back to his good old sweet, tail-wagging, fun loving self the second week after his surgery.
I just wanted to share this for people who are going through the same thing and questioning what the best course is for thier dog. If we had to do it again, I would absolutely make the same decision.
Kona made it 16 months with no signs of the cancer spreading - chest x-rays, spine, and limb x-rays were all clear.
Last night our sweet pup's heart failed and he passed away. I knew this day would come but it doesn't make it any easier. I am happy for the extra time we got to spend with our dog and being on three legs did not diminish it one bit.
Here is a video of him two weeks after surgery so people can see what our beloved dogs are capable of:

I am so sorry to hear about Kona and we lost our Sweetpea Sunday, they are probably "hanging out" together:) We had sweetpea only 3 months after diagnosis/amp and if we had a crystal ball, we would of still done the surgery- it allowed us the best 3 months ever!!! Hugz & prayers coming your way!!!!
Oh what a beautiful tribute to an amazing, inspawrational boy.
Please accept our deepest condolences. I'm so sorry to hear that Kona has earned his wings, I know your heart must be hurting so much right now.
His battle was too short, but by taking the time to share his Tripawd story with words and video, his strong spirit will give hope to so many people who need it most, forever. Thank you for your honesty and courage in writing here.
Many, many hugs coming your way. Please remember if you want to talk or just share more of his life with us, we're here to listen.

We are so sorry you had to say goodbye to Kona. Thank you for sharing his story and video. It will help others facing the same decisions.
I'm glad you got the extra time with Kona, it is very precious. But, I know that no matter how much time we have with our beautiful dogs it is never enough.
Many hugs to you and your family.
Karen and Spirit Magnum
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
So sorry to hear that Kona has earned his wings. He was a beautiful boy. No matter how much time we have with our pups it is never enough.
Thank you for taking the time to share his story. I hope that you soon remember him with more smiles than tears.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. We are so sorry it was Kona's time to go. We will be thinking of you in the next weeks as they will be difficult but your Kona had an amazing 16 months that you helped him have. He sure was a beautiful dog!
All our Best thoughts coming your way,

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011
Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011. Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs. If love alone could have saved you…
I'm sorry you lost Kona and as you said knowing does not make it any easier. Your video is a beautiful tribute to an even more beautiful dog. Thank you for sharing Kona's story.
