TPLO Surgery for 4 Yr. Cancer Survivor Three Legged Dog BoomerImage Enlarger

My 6 year old Labradoodle “Boomer” has just injured his back leg that now requires surgery.  He is a cancer survivor of 4 years now and still has so much life.  The surgeon has stated that he has never done the surgery on such a “big” dog (86lbs)  but feels it should be just fine.  I was just wondering if anybody else has done the TPLO surgery on the only good back leg?  Trying to get him to the bathroom 3 x a day is quite the project.  We have been told that once he does have the surgery he can not stand on his own for 21 days….we have just ordered his 3rd sling hoping we will get it right.

Hi Michele, thanks for joining the discussion!

You'll have to check out our latest blog post about tripawd ChuyMaloney, who had FHO surgery on his only remaining back leg. The good news is that once Boomer heals from surgery, he should be good as new! Best wishes to you all.

If you don't hear from TazzieDog, consider asking Pam her professional opinion in the Ask A Vet forum.

Hi Michele,  Chuy here!  Actually Chuy had FHO surgery on his back left leg and is missing his front left leg.  I can tell you that instead of ordering slings, take reusable shopping bags and cut them down the sides.  This will give you extra slings to use in case Boomer gets one dirty.  It also gives you handles to hold on to, to give you extral support!    These fit pretty much any dog too.  Check out the blog like admin said.  Boomer will do fine with your help.  Chuy didn't use his leg for 3 weeks and all of a sudden he was walking on it, running and jumping, chasing our other dog Gretchen around the yard.  You can find his story here - http://www.trip.....-tripawds/ and the contiuation of it here - http://www.trip.....o-surgery/

I hope this will give you some encouragement.  Trust me, Boomer will do just fine with lots of patience, care and Love from you!

Chuy, showing everyone that Tripawds do everything 3 times better than regular dogs!

Hi,

Our poodle lost her right rear leg and broke her pelvis on the left side from a car accident.  I know your dog is bigger, but it should be fine.  Angel had the pelvis surgery 2 weeks after the accident, so she couldn't use her hind end for 5 weeks.  We would carry her outside and hold up her rear for her to potty.  She enjoyed sitting outside and looking around while she couldn't walk.  She would try to take off so fast I never had time to strap a harness on her (and she lost a lot of skin on her torso), so I'd just bend over and support her while she did her thing.

I think you will definitely need a sling and someone else to help you support Boomer.   I can't imagine how hard it will be to lift him, but in the end it will be worth it!

Oh, I had an idea-what if they fitted him for a doggie wheelchair ?  Angel came home with a wheel chair , but refused to use it.  Maybe you can ask the vet about that.

Keep us updated!
