Good morning everyone !
I am so thankful to have found this site . It has been very informative and helpful in preparing myself and my puppy for what is coming up on Monday .
London is my one year old pit bull puppy who I rescued 11 months ago. She has always been healthy , active and happy but last week suffered a bizarre accident (still not sure what exactly happened as she is never out of my sight).
I found out she started limping with no use or control of her left front leg. The leg was dragging on the ground and I knew it wasn't just a pulled muscle.
I took her to the vet and got the diagnosis of a brachial plexus injury. I have gotten the same response from three vets now and amputation of the limb was the verdict.
I chose to do the surgery as soon as possible so she is set for Monday May 20. I couldn't let her sit in frustration and risk causing further injury when the leg hung up on things.
I am very nervous but remaining optimistic. I am not stressed about the tripod life at all but I am nervous of any surgery of course and I just want her to be as comfortable as possible. This was shocking news and is taking time to sink in but as the day approaches it is becoming real.
I ordered the harness with the handle from the page here , and did her crate and bed area with egg crate foam and a nice new blanket. She is already more comfortable on the foam pad rather than her bed so that was great advice !
I also ordered a therapeutic mesh dog blanket . I will ask my vet if that is ok to use in the future. I thought it may help ease some of the aches from the change in weight distribution. The good thing is she is already adjusted to three legs , now we just have her leg that doesn't work hanging up on things so I know she will do well with the surgery aftermath.
Thank you for listening. I am so thankful for this community ! Ordered a bumper sticker and ready to fill embrace this !
Welcome, your future posts will not need moderation.
Thanks for the kind words and best wishes for London's speedy recovery.

Welcome! You'll find there's lots of great advice on this site. My 7 month pup is also a front leg tripawd. Surgery is scary but soon it will just be a memory and you'll be busy with your pup! It sounds like you are getting well prepared. We love pictures here (hint hint hint).
Feel free to ask questions and share stories here. We look forward to getting to know you and London.
Hello and welcome! Sorry you needed us but glad you found us.
London has a few things in her favor: She isn't quite fully grown so she'll adjust faster; She doesn't have cancer so she'll live a natural life span; You and your dedication to her well being.
Amputation is a big surgery, you're right about that. She won't be a happy camper for a little while, but it won't last long. Pitties are so stoic that you will need to be really tuned in to London's pain. She may mask discomfort very effectively so look closely to make sure she's comfortable. There is no reason for her to hurt with all the wonderful pain meds out there.
If you have questions, ask away. The chat room in the evenings is a great way to get instant answers, advice or support. Pop in and introduce yourself if you have a chance.

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Welcome!
Sounds like you are well prepared. I have a good feeling that London will adapt to her new normal just fine. Don't worry too much when there are little setbacks. They just seem to happen the first two or three weeks. Shooter's is also a left front amp. I highly recommend an elevated dish as it puts less stress on the remaining leg and is just more comfortable for them.
Make sure and update us after surgery so we know all is well.
Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.
Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.
Welcome.
Sorry you are facing amputation, but London does have a lot of things going for her, including you!
We have hade a few Pitties here, mostly dealing with cancer. If you watch the rotating header at the top of the page you will see Trouble, Shana logs on as hugapitbull. Trouble beat cancer but was lost to arthritis. Trouble showed how well the bully breeds could handle being a Tripawd!
Good luck on Monday, let us know how you guys are doing.

London and family, I'd like to take more time to welcome you to Tripawds and thank you for your enthusiastic support! I was on my phone yesterday and wasn't able to do so. Thank you so much!
You've done your research and sought other opinions, you are a fantastic advocate for London! This series of videos and interviews with California Animal Rehab are great to watch to help prepare you further, and one of the videos has a dog named Happy who also suffered from the same injury as London.
If you need anything at all dont' hesitate to ask OK?
