Not sure if this is normal or not but Valentina"s incision had a spot that was starting to open up a little right where one of the drainage holes was. It was a small opening only about a 1/4 inch and pink flesh was showing with a little bit of clear sticky fluid coming out. Only a very small amount of fluid though. It didn't seem to bother her at all. It was like that for a couple of days then it closed back up and then opened up again and closed back up. It seems fine now. It does not look wet or red or anything. I don't know if she bumped it or something. She has been really energetic and wants to run laps around the yard. I am afraid she will get hurt because she did almost fall one day so now I always keep her on the leash so she won't get too wild. The vet said that she could have bumped it and to clean it. It seems fine now and I hope it stays that way so I don't have to take her back to the vet again. It seems really strange to me that it would open up after this long. Her 3 month ampuversary is on Tuesday. Even with bumping it , it seems like it shouldn't open up after that long. Anyone else had this happen? I'm trying not to worry about this too much. She is doing so well and I just got my bill to a zero balance so I was hoping for a rest period from worrying.
Valentina Angel Dane diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in front left leg May 21st 2011. Amputation July 5th 2011.
DOB:11/3/03 DOD:2/3/12 . Valentina was the Love of my Life!!! There is nothing like a Dane!!!
Wish I had some words of wisdom. I saw your other post and I'm glad you got the bill situation dealt with and behind you. I've not heard of this happening before. It does seem a bit odd after so much time... but maybe she did just bump it on something.
Sounds good that she has a lot of energy! I hope whatever the issue is that it doesn't happen again! The worrying is no fun and you are due for some more good, worry-free times with her. Since you've already called the vet, I guess just keep an eye on it. HOpefully it doesn't happen again!
Sending good wishes and healing Abby kisses,

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
It is probably a suture reaction. I'm sure she has several layers of suture holding all of her muscles and tissues together and sometimes those sutures don't dissolve when they are supposed to so you get a draining tract. The suture should work it's way out but sometimes antibiotics are needed.
By the way there are many human meds that can be scripted out for your big girl. I remember in your last post you mentioned that the antibiotics were very costly but you can get a month of cephalexin for a dog her size for $15. Your vet can easily write or phone a prescription to a local pharmacy like Walmart or Target. Some vets don't like doing this but you have certainly spent a lot recently so they should understand!

FYI: Jerry wrote in the News Blog about this with more detail after Wyatt had a surgery related issue nearly two years after his amputation...
