Well, Gus made the decision for us to amputate his leg.  Quick back story...two weeks ago his leg mysteriously was dead, no feeling.  We prayed feeling would come back, but yesterday I came home from work only to be completely traumatized by what I found.  My poor boy had been chewing on his dead leg all day and half of his paw was GONE.  GONE.  We rushed him to the vet and they kept him overnight.  They should be doing surgery right now.  I pray he makes it through.  He's been through so much these past few weeks.  One stressed (and traumatized) momma here....

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear what all of you have been through. That sounds traumatizing for everyone, but it sounds like he's in good hands now. I'll be thinking of you today and will check back in later to hear how surgery went.

YIKES!! OMD!! I'm sure you were traumatized beyond words!!

Talk about a dog finding a way to communicate his wishes..WOW!! That leg must have been so painful, so useless, for him to go to that extreme. Poor guy!

This amputation is THE best thing for him, THE VERY BEST THING!! Sure, recovery is no picni, but Gus is going to be doing sooo much better with that painful leg gone!!

Is Gus spending the night? If so, try and get some rest and know that this is the best thing for Gus!

Update when you can! Take some deep breaths and grab a bag of CHOCOLATE!

Hugs!

How horrible, just horrible for you. All of us here can imagine how you must feel. Good luck w/ the surgery and please don't feel guilty. You could not have known that this would happen.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I'm so sorry!  I can't even imagine coming home to that sight.

He's in good hands now and I know he will be feeling much better without that bum leg.

Sending strong, positive thoughts for a successful surgery and to relieve some of the stress you are feeling.

I'll be looking for an update on Gus.

He's home and doing GREAT!  He's tired from the surgery, but he's getting along just fine.  THANK GOD!  His incisions looks great.  They sent him home with pain meds and antibiotics.  He honestly looks SO much better without the leg.  Thank you all for your kind words.  I know it's early, but so far so good!  I have to work tomorrow, so my husband may take him to work with him to keep a close eye on him.  I'm so glad this is over!
