Hi! I've been following tripawds.com since my wonderful dog amputated her leg in August! We are from Porto Alegre, a 1.5 million people city, capital of Brazil's most southern state.

I've rescued Madalena when I was in high school and she was a 5-month puppy, in 2010 (her teeth are black and weird because she probably had canine distemper before we found her, we still don't know how she recovered). We've been inseparable ever since, and a year later adopted Dolores from the shelter I work in. Left to right, Dolores and Madalena in 2012:

We had a "foster-forever" that came to live with us in 2014, his name was Bronca (something like scold/rant in english), a grumpy (and cheese maniac) 15+ old senior. He was blind, deaf, had heart-disease, tumors, and maaaany other health (age and abandonment related) problems. He died April this year. This is everybody:

First semester this year, me and my mom noticed a lump in her right armpit, but it wasn't big so we did not worry. Couple of months later and she was limping and the lump had gotten bigger. We took her to our vet, did a biopsy and it came back with neurofibrosarcoma cells. 5 days later, on August 6, she was having her amputation. The vet told us that chemo wouldn't do anything for a tumor that big, so we did the surgery and waited.

My mom was terrified, but I knew it was for the best and wasn't surprised to hear that 12 hours after the surgery, still in the hospital, she was jumping up and down the stairs. She was always an active dog, but she turned it out like nothing had happened! This is me and her still at the hospital, 24 hours post-surgery, the other is my mom hiding behind her (so I would not catch her crying):

We came back home, she took her meds and started on supplements, Omegas and Diacerein. The vet told us not to worry, since neurofibrosarcoma does not tend to metastasize, and she had been living as always, but late September she started coughing blood. They found a tumor in her lungs and a mass in her spleen. We are still waiting for the results of the biopsy, but I already know that it will not be a primary tumor. The only thing that confuses me is how this sarcoma turned out to be metastatic.

In the meantime, we take walks, we sleep a lot (my girlfriend complains that after the surgery she claims even more space on the bed haha), sunbathe...This is us on our terrace the other Sunday (pardon my pajamas):

I have to say that is very difficult to find material resources to deal with everything and it makes me sad that many of the things I would love to have to make her life easier aren't available here. I usually buy baby clothes and adapt to cover her scar. I ordered a Ezy-Dog harness from a distributor in São Paulo and cannot find a way to order a (much needed) Ruffwear Harness, since no store ships to Brazil. I have ordered K9 Immunity Plus 15 days ago and it isn't even in the country yet, and time is running out...

But we are hopeful and waiting that the time we still have together is gonna be a-m-a-z-i-n-g!!!! Thank you for this community and the chance to see so many inspiring stories! :)))

Love,

Madalena and Augusta

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I'm back and just wanted to say that you are such a terrific dog Mom! Thank you for giving these great dogs a loving home and such wonderful vet care too. I'm sorry that the cancer metastasized, I wonder if it was misdiagnosed? Sometimes that happens unfortunately. But for now you have such a great attitude, and that will carry you all so far on this journey. Nobody knows how much time anyone has, with or without cancer, and by making the most of every day you are living life to the fullest, just like our dogs want us to. Congrats!

Now, about the Webmaster. Well I don't see any available right now in the Angel Exchange but what size is her girth? We'll try to help find one for you. Private message me her measurements OK? Click on my avatar and look for the PM button and we'll talk 🙂

Oh and by the way, we have another member, Johnnie, who is in Rio. Talk about defying the cancer odds! Check out his story.

Thank you, everyone! :))) I still don't know much about the lung tumor, results are coming this week, but I'm not really nervous since I already know the drill...

Hope to learn a lot from you guys!

Just catching up! What a love story! Melting my heart over here!!!

My Hap o y Hannah eventually developed a lung met. The vet said it was "big as a baseball". But you know what? My Happy Hannah didn't u derstand a word he said. She sure wasn't worried about any ole "diagnosis" and DEFINITELY didn't have a time frame stamped on her butt!!

We jad some great extra quality time after that and treasured every single second! I didn't think it was humanly possible to spoil her anymore than I had si ce her amputation...but I did! And it was fun for both of us!!

Stay in the moment...live in the present...we call this Being More Dog! Madalena isn't worried about her thing! She's just LOVING being with you...and sharing HER bed with you!! You are a great rime! Your positive attitude is empowering for BOTH of you!

Can't wait to see more pictures! Take lots and lots...and make sure you are in some of them too!

Keep on keeping on Madalena! We're all cheering for you!clap

Love!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Welcome, Augusta and Madalena!  now Johnnie isn't the only member south of the equator in the Americas.  Unfortunately, here in Brazil canine cancer is often misdiagnosed, after other options like arthritis have been ruled out.  From my experience, vets still see the diagnosis as a fatal and fast-moving disease that is not worth fighting because it's already a lost battle.  Fortunately, forums like this one come to show this isn't always the case.  Happy Hannah is an example, as you saw from Sally's testimony.

Since you have been browsing tripawds since August you already know that we don't believe in the prognosis of "average survival". We believe in quality of life and love and happiness for our fur babies, one day at a time.

Keep us posted on Madalena's updates and let us know how we can help.

hugs from Daniela & Johnnie

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

Daniela you are so pawesome for chiming in, thank you.

Many vets here in the U.S. also misdiagnose osteosarcoma, it's common unfortunately.

If either of you would like to share our Tripawds Amputation information brochures with your vets please let us know. We are happy to send them at no charge. I've also been thinking we might need to do some in other languages. If you think not enough folks will read them in English, let me know. Here is a blog post about the brochures:

Hey, everyone. Results of the biopsy are back, Madalena has an hemangioma in her lungs. No tumoral or malign activity.

Good news, after all! But I asked the vet if it was common bad luck to have a dog with cancer and after that, a mass in the lungs hahaha

We either wait and see if it will grow, using common cough meds to ease her cough, or we do a thoracotomy do remove it and analyze it even further. She is coughing and it is hard to watch, because we see that it scares her, the tumor is pressing something so it is a mechanic reflex she cannot understand.

We will talk to the vet again, see how much the surgery will cost and try to get her a bit stronger so she can be 100% going into surgery again.

I'll keep you posted 🙂

Thank you for your support!

Crazy what those of us on this journey see as good news! Others just wouldn't understand!

Just curious, did the vet prescribe prednisone to help if there is any inflammation? That could possibly help reduce the pressure and help control the cough. The cough meds should help surpress it some too.

Sending hugs ro you and sweet Madalena!

Sally - absolutely right.  Anything that is not malignant is good news, which doesn't mean a worry-free mom or vet.

hugs for Madalena!

Is that different than hemangioSCARCOMA? I am guessing it must be since we are happy about it?!? Shelby had hemangiosarcoma ... not a hemangioa!

Either way... since we are celebrating good news... cake for everyone!!! Kidding!

Glad she's doing well and on the road to a treatment and recovery!

hugs!
