Hi everyone,
Greetings from Hamilton, Canada! My husband and I are very grateful to have found this site.
Our 11-year old greyhound Grace Kelly is now on day 18 after rear left limb amputation. She broke her femur (spontaneous fracture) while we were visiting family out of town and we had it amputated the next day. Lab results have since confirmed osteosarcoma.
Grace handled the surgery reasonably well and we were able to bring her home the next day. Our first week home with her with tough (I wish I'd found this site sooner!) Grace developed a bad infection and had to be re-hospitalized on day 8 for more surgery to remove the dead tissue around the incision and insert some drainage tubes. Turns out the infection was resistant to most antibiotics 🙁
We spent a lot of time with her in hospital, and celebrated her 11th birthday with her last Friday in the ICU. The hospital's rehabilitation staff spent a lot of time with her too, and her mobility and confidence increased quite a bit. She was clearly a priority case and received a lot of love and attention!
We brought her home yesterday afternoon and she seems to be doing so much better this time around. Her appetite is great, and she's looking healthier every day. Truthfully she was never the most coordinated dog on 4 legs, and she's definitely finding 3 legs to be a bit of a challenge. But she's very stoic and determined 🙂
Her favourite thing in the world before all of this was her daily 3km walk around our local park; we're sticking to much shorter walks up and down the sidewalk until she gains more strength. I've been reading the Tripawds Required Reading List and it's helping out so much 🙂 We also have an appointment at the Ontario Veterinary College's Animal Cancer Centre on Monday to discuss our treatment options moving forward.
Again, we're so grateful this site exists! Thank you very much!

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
Sounds like you have things under control now- good job!
I'm sorry Grace had to lose a leg to cancer, and for the subsequent infection!
And Happy Birthday Grace Kelly! Spending it in the ICU is less than ideal, but that is past now and I'm sure Mom and Dad are making up for it with lots of goodies and treats!
Keep us posted on her progress and if you have any questions going forward.

Welcome! So sorry your diagnosis and amp brought you here but you are definitely among friends who definitely "get it". Love your beautiful girls name. She looks like a princess. Greyhounds are such Warriors and such sweet dogs. Sorry for the bumps in the road you hit early on but sounds like you've and your vet team have a good handle on everything now. So princess Grace Kelly just soak up all that extra spoiling and loving you are getting and revel in it. You've earned it sweet girl!

Kathleen, Michael & Grace Kelly, welcome! We're glad you're here but of course sorry for the diagnosis. You do sound like you have a GREAT attitude and that will carry you so very far.
I'm thrilled your finding our information useful. Here's another thought for you: why not see how she does in her very own chariot when you go on those longer walks?
