We amputated my yellow lab Dakota's left front leg, one month before her 14th birthday! Best decision I ever made. We found out on a Wednesday that she had osteosarcoma and 2 weeks later she was recovering. She was able to go to the bathroom 48 hours later un assisted. She goes up and down the stairs in our house, she runs in the backyard, she swims, she snuggles and she is PAIN FREE!!!
The first 2 weeks were hard because she was in pain from the surgery and incisions, but after that....she went back to being herself!
She did 4 rounds of chemo at UGA and has been on Metronomic Chemotherapy for 2 weeks now.
Its been a long process, but was worth it all. Oncologist gave her 12-18 months to live!
Glad to hear all went well. The next week will be the hardest part, but I promise it gets easier every day. He will be so happy to see you tomorrow and just hold onto the fact that you loved him so much you gave him the chance to be with you as long as possible. Keep smiling and sending happy thoughts your way!
Luanne & Shooter
Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.
Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.
We picked him up this morning. He seems to be doing ok. Peed and ate a cookie. Just gave him 2 tramadol because he was paniting pretty good. my surgeon said that pain actually slows down recovery.
Took him out into the back yard whcih involves about 5 stair steps. he went down fine with me next to him, but balked at coming back up. i lifted his rear end a little to help him.
It breaks my heart to see the sight of the surgery, but it also makes my heart swell with gratitude to know that he's doing ok, and that we may have many fine days ahead with our sweet boy.
Oh yey! He's doing well!!! Yippee! There will be some ups and downs. Roll with them. When things get tough, roll it back to basics: eating, peeing, pooping, drinking, and sleeping? Those are the basics. As time progresses, his spark will return and you'll be SO thrilled! He's going to amaze you! Keep up the great work!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
I am so happy that Townsey is home with you. I bet you are so relieved to have him back at the house. We had Cadence on Tramadol for pain. For her it worked really well. It made her a bit loopy but other than that, it controlled her pain.
Townsey may want to get up and go..go..go... But make sure he doesn't have to much activity. If they are over active to soon, it could hinder the healing process. I had to really put my foot down with Cadence. She thought she could still go on a two mile walk, the second day after surgery.
Please keep us updated. I hope you enjoy your night with Townsey by your side.
“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.” ― Milan Kundera
Glad to hear that Townsey is home. Your surgeon is absolutely right; keep him medicated and stay on the recommended pain pill regimen to help him recover faster. When pain gets out of control by skipping pain meds, it takes twice as much meds and twice as long time-wise to get it under control.
The next few days will have challenges and your heart will sink more than once. But watch how he just overcomes those first-time hurdles, you will be so inspired!
Keep us posted.
