So I took Fox to get his stitches out today. They have been leaking a little, but it was not cloudy and had no smell, and I called the vet Friday and they said it was normal and as long as it wasn't showing signs of infection, they would just see me today. WELL. Apparently the stitches on the outside were fine, but the stitches on the inside had come undone at the spot where they were leaking, and when the Dr went to take the outside stitches out, the incision gaped open and they had to sedate him, cut new edges where they had started healing separate from each other, and restitch him. Not fun. And the vet wants him to wear the cone at night now to make extra sure he doesn't get at his stitches while we are sleeping (which he has been licking them a little, but not terribly). Also, he said there were zero signs of infection, but he wants him to take another round of antibiotics since he had to restitch him up.
So that's a pretty disappointing setback. Also I don't understand how the outside stitches could look fine, but the ones inside come undone. Is that something the vet did wrong when he sewed him up the first time?
Well that's a bummer, especially with you being so diligent and running it by the Vet the other day
I can't address how the interior stitches "came apart"? Guessing they were Soluable??? Nope, no insight here. Seems like possibly the technique for the interior stitching wasn't top notch? Or maybe somehow Fox overdid som6 when you weren't looking? I have no clue, but would love to see what others say.
What I can say is we learn some from everyone's experience. In this case, the "focus" was if determining if the leakering had the properties of an infection....the smell, color of the "blood", warm to touch, etc. From the photo it didn't look like there was any swelling.
So for me, the learning lesson is, just because there appears to be no infection, doesn't mean "something " hidden is going on!
I can only imagine how frustrated you must be- This is NOT what you, or we, were expecting! The important thing is it is now rectified. As maddening as it is, It's so crucial to keep that cone on and make sure he does no jumping, no running etc.
What does the Vet say as far as healing time? Is it another two weeks at least?
Glad he's on another round of antibiotic just to be safe.
This too shall pass!!!! You are d6 everything right!-

I am honestly thinking the technique for the interior stitching was at least partly at fault. But I am not a professional, so I can't say for sure. Yes, we are looking at another 10-14 days healing time. The vet stitched him up with the dissolvable stitches this time, so we don't have to go get them removed this time. He said that's what he usually likes to do, but the surgery was complicated and he had already been under anesthesia for a long time , and the regular stitches were quicker to close him up. Regardless of whether or not we have to go in to get them removed, you can bet your bottom that if I have ANY questions about something Fox and I will be heading up to the vets office in person this time.
Also we got a puppuccino from Starbucks on the way TO the vet
And a cheeseburger on the way home from the vet 😊
Awww sweet Fox! I'm sorry you had to go through that procedure, and hope the Pupaccino and cheeseburger helped you feel better.
It's hard to say why that happened, and you'll probably never know. The good news is that you caught the problem, there was no infection and he's on the mend. Way to go!
Yeah, no fun for anyone but just follow Fox's lead and take things one hop at a time. You are getting there!

Those pictures of Fox are mel my heart. Such a sweet, sweet face with beautiful gentle eyes. So bummed you jad to go thru this.both of you. But I th Fox does j d too much bec of all the good treats he's gettkng.
Guess he's starting the pain meds back to full dose just like at the start two weeks ago? Obviously this isn't as MAJOR as the amputation, but it still jas to hurt.
Please give that sweet brave boy a cuddle for us, okay? And UIU try and get some rest tonight!

Hahaha so my silly boy broke his E Collar running into things last night. Broke the plastic while trying to squeeze in between the coffee table and the couch to be next to me. It was late and everything was closed already, so I taped it together until I could go get another today. Well he started running into the table on purpose to try and break the cone again 🤦.
Today I got him an inflatable ring to go around his neck, and another plastic e collar for a backup in case the inflatable didn't work. It seems to work great though! He's not a huge fan, but at least he's not running into tables trying to break it off lol
I took some pics for you guys
Ive been taking the cone off to go potty, but the donut threads onto his collar, so I would have to disassemble so that he would have his collar to attach his leash to. Ideally I would just have a spare collar, but I don't 🤷
Oh my gosh that crazy pup! He knew the perfect way to get out of the plastic cone! Must mean he’s getting his mojo back, glad it all worked out.
Thanks for the adorable photos!

Oh Fox! You are too smart for your own good! I have to say, as much as you hate the cone, you look adorable in the inflatable one!😉 You behave yourself sweet boy.
Thanks for the pics. Fox is so darn cute😎

Wow - what a journey you guys went on. Fox is absolutely adorable and you guys are such great people to take him into your home. He did pick you for a reason 🙂
We had issues with a plastic cone as well but Zeus would just get so spooked by it, I guess all the sounds are amplified, so we decided to just dress him up in different superhero shirts until his stitches were out. But it is easier to cover and control the licking on a front limb amputation.
I wish him a speedy recover and looking forward to reading more about his adventures!!
Hi everyone! We just wanted to stop in and say hello! Fox has been doing great, he seems pretty much healed up and has even been playing some with the pups next door!
We have an appointment on the 8th for his neuter surgery, I wasn't so sure about taking him back for more surgery so soon, but the vet said to go ahead and get it taken care of.Awww looking good Fox! You and your furiend look so hoppy!
Sorry you have to do another surgery but it's pretty easy peasy compared to getting your leg amputated. After that, you can do ANYTHING with ease!
