On Sunday 6th April, it was a very special day. Darcy Deerhound celebrated her 6th birthday. Most of you here will understand that when I got The Call from the vets on 16th October 07 to say that Darcy had bone cancer and that the options were euthanasia or amputation, I certainly didn't imagine that we'd be having any sort of party 6 months later. And when Darcy had a very unusual reaction to her final chemo session and ended up in the vets for a week on a drip and wearing a doggie diaper and not eating solid food for 2 weeks, again, celebrations were far from reality.
But - at the end of Feb, Darcy was signed off from the vets and tentative plans started to form in my mind.
By March, the plans started to take shape a little more and then a couple of weeks before the big date, I felt confident enough to send invitations and plan food!
We invited human friends only (as we have 11 resident dogs so it wasn't possible to have canine party goers!) and we included the staff from our vets. Without their team efforts, there would have been no party at all.
On the day there were 19 adults in our home (including 2 of our vet nurses) and everyone had come to kiss the birthday girl and wish her well. I managed not to cry for the whole time (*blush*) and we had a fabulous day.
Darcy lapped up the attention (and about 354543 cocktail sausages) and she got cards and gifts from her admirers.
Below are a few pictures from the party ...
We are very proud of our girl

HAPPY BIRTHDAY girlfriend, you look faaaabulous! Like Nae Nae I want to know where did your mommy get you that fantastic collar. I love it and it looks great on you. Gee...cocktail sausages, definitely cannot get better than that except for maybe Ben's cheeseburger...tight choice there. The pictures are great and so glad that you had a great time. Check out that line for the food table LOL. Many more my friend many more....
Thanks all (and thanks Jerry for fixing my topic title!).
Darcy's collar is one which helps to raise funds for research into canine cancer and you can read about the collars here http://www.2hou.....r-419.html and about Hope for Hounds here http://www.casu.....ounds.html

Happy Birthday Pretty Girl!! I noticed that you had said that Darcy was on a drip. Did she every finish her Chemo or did you decide not to continue? My 8 year old Rottie (Sasha) just went through hind leg amputation due to Osteosarcoma and we are debating on putting her through Chemo. To Chemo or not to Chemo? This is my delema. I know I will beat myself up no matter what decision I make. If I don't do it, should I have done it? If I do it and she gets sick it will be why did I put her through this? How do we make the decision. Anyway, either way I am glad I found this site. It has made me realize that I am not alone. Thank you all!!
Sasha and Sherry
Hi Sherry - welcome to Jerry's site!
Darcy did finish her chemo. Her bad reaction was at the very end of her scheduled treatment. There's a big thread in one of the forums here all about chemo and I think I've put Darcys whole story in there (the chemo aspect) in various parts as time has gone by and others have added their input too so that would be worth reading I think.
To be honest with you, even though Darcy did get poorly from her treatment at the end of the sessions, if I (god forbid) had to make decisions again for another of my dogs in the future - as long as the chest was clear and they were a good candidate for chemo, I would do it all again. Yes, it was awful when she was poorly but if that couple of weeks of being very unwell and sad is the payoff for her having extra great months or years ahead, I personally feel it will have been worth it.
Ask Sasha to make a thread telling us all about herself! We will all rally round and offer lots of support and chat for both human and canine

Lots of people wonder about whether or not to chemo. My pawrents were the same way.
A while back we did a blog post about it, and people shared their experiences. The post was done before I found out my cancer returned and I went on chemo.
And yes, please have Sasha make a new thread to tell us more and share some photos!
Love,
Jerry
