Bravo! Blitz and Carol, bravo! Sooo happy to hear this! Goosebumps and tears in my eyes as I read this. Its that much sweeter because he had such a rough start. Thank you for being brave enough to stick it out and give him a chance to show you how awesome he could be on 3 legs. I bet he is magnificent as he patrols the shoreline.
It's nice that he can spend his summer on the beach, instead of ice and snow. Until you get there, did I tell you about "Chicken Grit"? Seems to me I did; this is the best product to help them with traction on slippers surfaces. We wouldn't have survived 3 Wisconsin winters without it.
Michelle has a good point about the sand and soreness, especially if its sugar sand. I have no doubt Blitz will adapt like the Warrior he is...that's how Dobie's see themselves, you know - WARRIORS. Best of luck to you all, please keep in touch.
I never asked if you are going to do chemo with him...sounds like not? Which is totally fine, some people do, some don't. We did, and we'll never know if that was part of the reason Nitro's cancer never returned, or not. I also chose not to do follow-up X-rays once we finished chemo - most people DO seem to do them - but at that point, I figured we had done all we could do for him, if he developed lung mets, his treatment from then on wouldn't be any different than if he didn't. By then, I needed to stop obsessing on things I couldn't change, so I sort of took a "bury-my-head-in-the-sand" approach. I couldn't bear to stress myself out waiting for an X-ray, holding my breath to see if there were mets. About 2 1/2 years after his amp he needed X-rays to see why he was having trouble walking; they did 27! Afterwards, my vet said she did a "drive-by" of his lungs, and they were clear. His X-rays showed arthritis, and some spinal stenosis by his tail.
Whew! Didn't mean to be so long-winded.....enjoy every day with your beautiful boy! I'd love to see pictures of him by his shoreline and in the sand. You have my cell number, feel free to text me or call whenever, even if it's just to say he's doing great. Take Care.
Paula and Warrior Angel Nitro
Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"
