About 6 weeks ago, I adopted Asher who is a recent tripod. Asher is roughly 6-7 years old and an English coonhound. According to my paperwork from the rescue Asher had a bone infection that was treated but as he got better, he wasn't using his leg and it was amputated his back left leg. During the surgery they left a nub.
Asher runs, hikes, swims and is doing amazing considering his amputation was in December and he was in a shelter for approximately 5 months.
We started training classes and we have noticed that he struggles with sit and lay. He can do both but lacks confidence going into a sit and doesn't seem to know how to balance it. Additionally when he runs we notice he kicks his back leg out.
I am hoping to be able to find tools and resources to help him further strengthen his body and find ways to encourage his confidence and reinforce he can do it! Any tips, guidance or links to help us on our journey are greatly appreciated!
Hello and welcome to you and Asher! We are so glad you joined us and shared Asher's story. He's suck a lucky pup to find his way to a great parent like you!
I know he's already part of your pack, but since his Gotcha Day is so recent, be sure to check out our What to Know When Adopting a Tripawd articles. In there, you'll find information about life on three and how to keep him strong and injury free. Based on what you are describing, it sounds like Asher can really benefit from canine rehabilitation therapy. He hasn't been that far out of his surgery date and while it will take him time to get strong, there are many things you can do to help. Start by getting him evaluated, and the therapist can explain what his strengths and weaknesses are, and how you can help him find that confidence and live pain free. The best part is the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit !
Also be sure to check out our Loving Life On Three Legs e-book, which also has tons of tips. So does our Tripawds Gear Blog .
I have no idea what an English Coonhound looks like, I know everyone would love to see him if you feel like sharing photos. This is how adding images works:
- Upload pics to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or your own Tripawds blog (https://tripawd...../supporter). Pictures and video have to be hosted (live) somewhere other than in the forums.
- Once the photo is uploaded somewhere, right click and copy the Image URL or just copy the image if you’re on a phone
- Return to your Tripawds Forum post and paste the image URL (or the image itself) in your post. It should automatically appear.
If you’d like help figuring out the process let me know.
