Soon to be three leg said:
My daughters six month old Dauchsund puppy is set to have his front left arm amputated on Monday March 6th.
Oh we're so sorry to hear why he's losing his leg. That had to have been a really terrible scene! How fortunate he survived. We realize that losing a leg is a traumatic thing but we think it's better than the alternative.
Charon had some great advice, we'll just add that you might want to also check out our e-book, "Three Legs & a Spare" if you haven't already, for some more info about what to expect. Also, based on how many Doxy's are affected by back issues, and that front-leg tripawds often tend to have more spinal issues later in life, getting him evaluated by a certified rehab vet specialist can help ensure that he doesn't experience long-term spinal issues. You'll want a specialist who can give you homework assignments so that you can continue to do some simple exercises and massage at home. Here's a post about how to find a qualified practitioner.
Yes, I agree, do start a new topic in "Beyond Cancer" to share your pup' story with others and give hope and inspawration to future Doxy members. Thanks so much for joining us (sorry you had to!).

My husband and i recently adopted a little doxie girl with a derformed front paw. If you are interested in chatting about it email me at pantera1561@aol.com
She is 4 months old and we have not yet had her for a week but we have 2 other dogs one is a four legged doxie male and a pit bull mix female she is keeping right up with them. I too am concerned about long term health. Our girl is really tiny and has a crooked tail also.

Hi there! Thank you so much for sharing your doxie's story. We hope you'll consider registering so your posts can appear immediately.
Have you seen our interviews and videos with California Animal Rehab? These are really helpful in knowing what to expect and prevent. Also, our Tripwds gear blog has some tips and ideas for getting and staying strong.
Is your doxie trying to use the leg? If so I would keep an eye out for ulcerations and things like that. Since your dog is a Doxie, long-term effects like back strain could be an issue. If it's at all possible, I would have her evaluated by a certified veterinary rehab vet to find out what you can expect and get some tips specific to her situation.
Thanks again for posting. We hope to learn more about her!
