I always wonder about the dogs I follow and when I do not see anything for weeks my imagination gets the best of me. So that being said I will give a brief update on Harley. He just finished two weeks of doxycline which was prescribed in the event his platelets were low due to a tick related disease. The bloodwork for this ended up being negative and Thursday I took him in for bloodwork to check the platelet count and it dropped another 10,000 and he is now at 30,000. The oncologist thinks this is probably immune-related platelet destruction and not related to the cancer and recommended he see someone in internal medicine at the facility. Since it is not oncology related, I am taking him back to his original vet to follow up on this. I think prednisone is usually the prescribed med for this. I'm just not sure that I want an ultrasound at this point -- it just seems the more I look the more I find. Harley continues to be happy and is maybe just a little more tired but I would be too if I was going to the vet this often! So our journey here began in May when he was scheduled for a limb amp, but that was aborted because two masses were found on his lungs (maybe metastasis, maybe not). Then he was on metronomic chemo for two months this summer and the lung masses were growing slowing and were described as stable. A good thing so in September he was able to have the tumor debulked again (third time) and just as we were ready to begin another chemo protocol, his platelets dropped unbelievably low, from about 200,000 to 42,000 in 4-5 weeks. Was it the chemo, was it stress of surgery (surgeon did say there was a lot of oozing this time) or just his bad luck.
Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/
I'm so sorry to hear that you're having another problem to deal with.
If the low platelets were from chemo or surgery, it should have rebounded long ago. I too would be worried about an immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). Definitely follow-up with your vet or an Internist, if they think it's warranted. There are so many causes of platelet destruction, it sometimes can be difficult to sort out. Just the presence of a tumor can cause it. If antibodies which a dog is developing against the tumor are closely related to platelet membrane antigens, it may initiate platelet destruction.
I'm glad Harley is happy though, that is really the most important thing. Sending positive and healing vibes your way.
Right hind limb amputated 7/3/12 for OSA, started on alternating cycles of Carboplatin and Doxorubicin and oral Palladia. Single lung met 9/1. Met in the neck muscle removed 9/30. Large mass in sublumbar lymph node 10/2. Rescue chemo with ifosfamide 10/6. Mets to the rib and axillary lymph node 10/21. Started Leukeran and Pred 10/25. Wookie left this Earth for a far better place on 12/4/12. I miss you, Boo, you were my heart.
Oh, Harley, I've thought about you often and I was hoping that no news was good news. I am so sorry to hear of the new worries. Kathy, I send masses of hugs to you and virtual belly rubs to that special boy!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...
