Andie a rescued Golden is 10y4m old. She has been a therapy dog in Texas Medical Center, Sugar Land and Missouri City since April 2012. She has made over 1600 therapy visits and now it’s her turn. On June 10, 2020 she misstepped and broke her left femur. We rushed her to our vet and a tumor was found in the break. The rest of the femur was still good bone. On June 12 we had her leg amputated by Brian Beale in Victoria, TX at the Beale  Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Hospital. After surgery recovery we consulted with Andrew Novosad at Sugar Land Veterinary Specialist. She started her carboplatin chemo treatments on July 23. She didn’t have any side effects from the treatment. She will have a series of six treatments. Our next treatment will be this Thursday 8/13.
I have started a low carb diet and she’s doing well on it.

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I'm sorry cancer and amputation made you find us but glad that you are part of our family now!

Andie sounds like a wonderful dog- Therapy Dogs have such a wonderful temperament.

You are through recovery and it sounds like she is handling her chemo well... any questions or concerns for us to help with?

Otherwise I guess we just need some pictures of your warrior!

Do subsequent chemo treatments become harder for her to tolerate?

how do I post pictures of Andie?

Awww, Andie's avatar photo is so pretty.  Here's a starting link to help add photos.

adding images

There seems to be some leeway among Oncologists with the number of Carboplatin  treatmemts they specify.   Some suggest four (my Happy Hannah had four);  some suggest five and some go with six.  No right or wrong.

It's  my  understanding that chemo is cumulative.  The good thing about chemo is you can stop at anytime if  need be.  Some Vets send the dog home with Cerenia  in case there is a little bit of nausea.  But it sounds like Andie has already moved past the time when side effects might show up...usually  between day three and five.

Obviously  not a Vet and not giving  Vet advice.

So Andie's having a smooth recovery?? Can wait to hear more about her and see pictures too!

Hugs

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hi Andie and family, welcome! We are so sorry you had to join our club but super glad you found us. And how cool that if you had to have surgery, it was done by Dr. Beale. He's one of our favorite vets, we've interviewed him a couple of times for Tripawds News and were so excited to learn he opened up his own clinic. I don't know Dr. Novosad but look forward to learning more about the practice.

As for subsequent chemo visits, it really depends on the dogs. Most sail through with minimal side effects (GI upset mainly). We'll keep our paws crossed that Andie's next treatment goes just as easily.

Adding images is pretty easy. We would love to see them! Here's what to do:

  1. Upload pics to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or your own Tripawds blog!
  2. Right click and copy the Image URL or just copy the image if you’re on a phone
  3. Return to your Tripawds Forum post and paste the image URL (or the image itself) in your post. It should automatically appear.

If you’d like help figuring out the process let me know.

Andie - my name is Buffy and I also am a 10 year old Golden Retriever therapy dog.  My Mom was wondering if you would be willing to share the ingredients in the low carb diet you mentioned you are on.  I'm sending nothing but pawsitive thoughts your way - along with tons of puppy hugs and kisses.  Best of luck sweetie.  You're a champ !!  Love, Buffy

Great question Buffy!

Andie, to keep things organized, here's a good place to share that diet info:

Hi Andie,

Just wanted to welcome a fellow Texan.  I am located in Brookshire, very close to the Sugar Land area.

Andie, is a cutie, and we are sending positive thoughts your way.  Can't wait to see more pics!
