Hi- I am just home from the vet clinic where our dog had her front leg amputated today. I had hoped to bring her home tonight, but the poor thing can't even stand up- is that normal?? Her surgery took over 3 hours - seemed long to me. She has no desire to eat or drink. I am wondering now if we made the right decision. Any words of advice - how long until your dog was actually walking ( and pottying ) on his own?
Thanks
Carmen ans Lira dog.

What your experiencing are perctly normal, paranaoid human emotions. I don't know of any dog who has fone home the same day of amputation surgery. With the amount of medications Lira is on right after surgery, it would be surprising for her to even try to stand up. What she needs most right now is time to recuperate, and for yout to be a strong pack leader.
Just remember one thing. There are no regrets allowed here. And be sure to check out our top ten concerns post. Best wishes for a complete speedy recovery. We look forward to hearing more about Lira.

Lira update !!!
She is home !! I picked her up today. Our vet showed me how to change her dressing. When I arrived at the clinic this morning - there she was - standing , barking on three legs as if to say ” where the heck were you last night !! “ I took her outside - she peed, went back in - ate a can of food and had a big drink. She's home now - sleeping for the last couple of hours. Still has her Fenanyl patch on, Tramadol 100 md twice a day for 2 weeks and Gabapentin 3 x a day for 10 days. I have a Ruff Wear harness ready for when her incision has healed a bit. The vehicle thing was a bit tricky though. She fell once and yelped - but I guess that's going to happen. Now we'll just wait for the first BM and rejoice !!
Thank you all very much. Will post again son!
Carmen and Lira in Canada !!!
Trouble was at the clinic for two nights before coming home. She needed minor assistance for about two days, and then she was able to get around on her own. Hang in there, this is the tough part. The recovery time is really quick, about 2 weeks, but seems like a long time with all the adjusments that must be made.
Do not doubt your decision. This is all going to work out, you will see. Be confident when you are around Lira, they read your emotions. If you are confident, she will be too.
